The Body and the French Revolution

This book, first published in 1989, is an analysis of what changed in 1789 with the French Revolution and what contemporary life owes to the event. It was not simply a series of events with worldwide repercussions, but also represented the foundation of the middle-class domination of social, cultural and political space, which survives today and is the site of major crises of public culture. One such site is the body. In spite of its prominence in consumer culture as an object of adornment and beautification, the human body retains none of its historic dignity and authority. The argument of this book is that the French Revolution played a crucial part in this diminution of the body. It traces revolutionary models of behaviour around the body and public life, and explains how such myths as the division between public and private, male and female worlds, and such masculine values as ‘objectivity’ were an integral part of the new public world created by the revolutionary middle class.

Body 2.0

Scientists are on the verge of a revolution in biomedical engineering that will forever change the way we think about medicine, even life itself. Cutting-edge researchers are working to build body organs and tissue in the lab. They are developing ways to encourage the body to regenerate damaged or diseased bone and muscle tissue. Scientists are striving to re-route visual stimuli to the brain to help blind people see. They may soon discover methods to enlist the trillions of microbes living in our bodies to help us fight disease. Learn about four strands of bioengineering—tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, neuroengineering, microbial science, and genetic engineering and synthetic biology—and meet scientists working in these fields.

Aerodynamics of Bodies of Revolution

Aerodynamics of Bodies of Revolution

A comprehensive technical treatise is provided on the aerodynamics of bodies of revolution from transonic to hypersonic speeds, covering all aspects of the subject, including transonic flow, linearized supersonic flow, Newtonian flow, rarefield gas and free-molecule flow, skin friction, heat transfer, and mass transfer. This English translation of a unique Russian textbook is provided with some corrections, references for all sources the editor could identify, redrawn figures, and an editor's introduction to each chapter summarizing and referencing pertinent material that has appeared since 1964, when the second edition was published. Krasnov's general approach assumes knowledge of the basic gas dynamic equations and applies them to solve aerodynamic problems. All important methods and techniques in modern aerodynamic theory are developed, with the aim of presenting practical methods for solving engineering problems. Results are usually given in the form of working equations, graphs, tables, or detailed sequential calculation methods. (Author).

In Degeneration and Revolution: Radical Cultural Politics and the Body in Weimar Germany Robert Heynen explores the impact of conceptions of degeneration, exemplified by eugenics and social hygiene, on the social, cultural, and political history of the left in Germany, 1914–33. Hygienic practices of bodily regulation were integral to the extension of modern capitalist social relations, and profoundly shaped Weimar culture. Heynen’s innovative interdisciplinary approach draws on Marxist and other critical traditions to examine the politics of degeneration and socialist, communist, and anarchist responses. Drawing on key Weimar theorists and addressing artistic and cultural movements ranging from Dada to worker-produced media, this book challenges us to rethink conventional understandings of left culture and politics, and of Weimar culture more generally.
