Ubuntu

Ubuntu: Interdisciplinary Conversations Across Continents is a collection of work by 17 scholars emerging from the Ubuntu Dialogues Seminar Exchange Fellowship hosted by Stellenbosch University in South Africa and Michigan State University in the US between 2019 and 2022. This collaborative work brings new voices and new ways of interrogating a concept that holds possibilities for living together differently. The contributions problematise the concept in provocative and surprising ways and disrupt narrow and superficial interpretations of Ubuntu. --- The contributors to this book foreground critical issues which are fundamental towards a deeper understanding of the notion of ubuntu. – Dr Sithembele Marawu, University of Fort Hare This book features next generation rising stars from places such as South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Burundi, and the US, writing about ubuntu, the indigenous southern African term often used to capture African philosophy, especially its moral dimensions. A fresh, kaleidoscopic engagement with ubuntu. – Professor Thaddeus Metz, University of Pretoria

Cities in Flux

The essays in this volume all circle around questions of urbanisation in (post-)apartheid South Africa and its effects on the country's socio-political realities, as well as its representation in-and effect on-the country's literary and artistic production. The included essays discuss the constant flow of people (not only into, within, and out of a city, but also between different cities), the continuously changing conditions (both physical and immaterial as well as past and present) of (South) Africa's urban areas, and these shifting conditions' effects on (South) Africa's cities. This ground breaking new work draws together a cross-section of South African scholars to provide a lively and comprehensive review of the under-researched area of heritage practice following the introduction of the National Heritage Resources Act. Looking at the daily heritage debates, from naming streets to projects such as the Gateway to Robben Island, Desire Lines addresses the innovative strategies that have emerged in the practice of defining, identifying and developing heritage sites. In a unique multi-disciplinary approach, contributions are featured from a broad spectrum of fields, including the built environment and public culture and education. Showcasing work from tour operators and museum curators alongside that of university-based scholars, this book is a comprehensive and singularly authoritative volume that charts the development of new and emergent public cultures in post-apartheid South Africa through the making and unmaking of its urban spaces. This pioneering collection of essays and case studies is an indispensable guide for those working within or studying heritage practice.

Exploring decolonising themes in SA sport history

Exploring decolonising themes in SA sport history

In an effort to understand how the absences of the colonial subject in sport were engineered and how colonial narratives became fixed in the literature and minds of South Africans, Exploring Decolonising Themes in SA Sport History: Issues and Challenges attempts a full-scale restructuring and rewriting of the history of sport in South Africa to include black South Africans, and thereby places them on the forefront of a colonial history. The book includes the articulations of academic researchers, professionals and retired sportspeople who were requested to explore their unique areas of interest in sport from the perspective of themes in South African sport history. They place themselves at the centre of discourses that dispel myths that blacks had no sport significance prior to 1994. The book ultimately challenges this spirit of the past where there was only one narrative ? a white male sport tradition. Rather than adapting past colonial and apartheid narratives, this work seeks to fundamentally replace and supersede them.
