La lonja del saber desarrolla una perspectiva original desde la que llevar a cabo el estudio de este proceso, utilizando las herramientas básicas del análisis económico, pero abordando las cuestiones fundamentales investigadas en la epistemología (¿cuál es el fundamento de la validez del conocimiento científico?) y en la sociología de la ciencia (¿cómo está estructurado el proceso de investigación desde el punto de vista social?). En la primera parte ("Economía constitucional de la ciencia") se estudia la elección de las normas metodológicas de una disciplina científica por parte de sus miembros, mientras que en la segunda parte ("Análisis del consenso científico") se estudia el mecanismo por el que se alcanza en cada disciplina un determinado grado de acuerdo acerca de los resultados de la investigación.
