İslam eğitim tarihinde önemli bir yere sahip olan ilim öğrenme metodu rıhle, Hz. Peygamber (s.a.v.) döneminde İslam dinini öğrenme gayesi ile ortaya çıkmıştır. Zaman içerisinde çeşitli sebeplerle birçok âlimin farklı bölgelere dağılmasıyla ilim bu bölgelere taşınmıştır. Bu durum mekânsal olarak rıhle metodunun kapsamını genişletmiş ve önemli rıhle merkezleri oluşmuştur. Köken itibari ile dini ilimlerin öğrenimine dayanan rıhle metodu, zamanla tüm ilimleri de kapsamış ve sistematik hale gelmiştir. Ulusal ve Uluslararası Farabi, Mevlana ve Erasmus gibi öğrenci değişim programlarıyla bütünleşerek, bu kadim gelenek sürdürülmeye devam etmektedir. Birbirini tamamlayan bu eğitim ve öğretim metodunu birbirinden ayırmak mümkün değildir. Bu programlara katılan öğrenciler ve uzmanlarla, fiziki olarak ev sahipliği yapan üniversiteler, şehirler ve ülkeler bu sayede birçok kazanım elde etmektedirler.
