Sketches of Life

Brenda Johnson has found herself irresistibly led to record her experiences, relationships, meditations, prayers -- and her disappointments -- in words that are musical, reflective, and undercut with irony. She brings curiosity, candor, and unfailing sympathy to a life lived with deep appreciation. A most rewarding read! ---Quincy Howe, Ph.D. Professor of Classics, Comparative Religion A sacred sister who has intensely lived the life she "sings about" in her poet-Spirit song, Brenda Johnson has penned wisdom-word poems. They are layered with love and joy blending together as a literary legacy which promotes soul growth and mental elevation; quite apropos to her spiritual discipline as a long...

From Dirt to Destiny

This is the inspiring memoir of a young woman brought up by drug-addicted parents in a world of dysfunction, struggling to discover her true direction in life. In this project, C.L. Gray shares her story of personal triumph, tragedy, and prevailing fate, along with all of the sorted life's characters encountered in between. Now that she has overcome, she offers her story to both impart hope and challenge others to find their own purpose in living. The Role of Data at the Semantics-Pragmatics Interface

To join the recent debate on data problem in linguistics, this collection of papers provides complex dual purpose analyses at the interface of semantics and pragmatics (including historical, lexical, formal and experimental pragmatics). Based on several current theories and various types of data taken from a number of languages, it discusses object theoretical issues of referentiality, scalar implicatures, implicit arguments, grammaticalization, co-construction and syntactic alternation in their mutual connections to metatheoretical questions concerning the relationship between data and theory.

Hyperbole in English

Non-literal language is ubiquitous in everyday life, and while hyperbole is a major part of this, it has so far remained relatively unexplored. This volume provides the first investigation of hyperbole in English, drawing on data from genres such as spoken conversation, TV, newspapers, and literary works from Chaucer to Monty Python. Combining quantitative and qualitative analyses, it uses approaches from semantics, pragmatics, discourse analysis and classical rhetoric to investigate in detail both speaker-centered and emotive aspects of hyperbole, and also addressee-related aspects, such as interpretation and interactional uptake. Illustrated with a range of diachronic case studies, hyperbole is also shown to be a main means of linguistic creativity, and an important contributor to language change. The book concludes with an exploration of the role of hyperbole in political speaking, humour, and literature. Original and in-depth, it will be invaluable to all those working on meaning, discourse, and historical linguistics.
