Dance diamantes (dee a mont') are five line stanzas in the shape of a diamond which develop around one concept. They sketch an impression of the subject, not a full-blown description of it. The stanzas easily translate into short single-focused dances yet are compressed enough to inspire longer works. These conceptual poems prompt the choreographer to clearly express intent from beginning, middle, to end without wandering off the subject. Written stanzas are built according to word count rather than syllable-count: line 1 (1 word), line 2 (2 words), line 3 (3 words), line 4 (2 words), and line 5 (1 word).
