Across the world, the risks of wildfires are increasing and expanding. Due to past and current human actions, we dwell in the age of fire – the Pyrocene – and the many challenges and climate adaptation questions it provokes. Exploring our past and current relationships with fire, this book speculates on the pyro futures yet to be designed and cared for. Drawing upon fieldwork, mapping, drone imagery, and interviews, this publication curates 27 global design case studies within the vulnerable and dynamic wildland-urban interface and its adjacent wildlands. The book catalogs these examples into three approaches: those that resist the creative and transformative power of fire and forces of landscape change, those that embrace and utilize those forces, and those that intentionally try to retreat and minimize human intervention in fire-prone landscapes. Rather than serving as a book of neatly packaged solutions, it is a book of techniques to be considered, tested, and evaluated in a time of fire.
2 X Brett Ewins and Peter Milligan
Dark & Golden Books are pleased to be able to present 2 x Brett Ewins and Peter Milligan, a new collection of a pair of stories by Peter Milligan and Brett Ewins, unfairly out of print since their original publication. In 1980's Rooney's Lay, one of their first collaborations, the space age and sleaze collide in newly wild ways, while in 1991's adaptation of Kafka's In The Penal Colony, the duo elevate and interrogate the original text, teasing meanings from the fabric of the story. The comic also features new introductions to each story and a brief interview with Milligan, as well as a timeline of the creators' work together. Rooney's Lay has been scanned and restored from its one appearance in 1980's Magnetic Fieldz 2. In the Penal Colony has been newly scanned from the original art. Dark & Golden Books are dedicated to charting a less travelled course through the history of British comics, finding and celebrating mislaid and forgotten classics for the audience of today in new high-quality editions.

Living Surfaces
An investigation of aesthetics and visualizations of planetary surfaces from an experimental media theory perspective. What if every vista, every island—indeed, every geographical feature on Earth—could be viewed as an art object? In Living Surfaces, Abelardo Gil-Fournier and Jussi Parikka explore how the surface of the Earth has, over the last two centuries, become known and perceived as an environment of images. Living Surfaces features a range of case studies from eighteenth-century experiments with and observations of vegetal matter, photosynthesis, and plant physiology to twenty-first-century machine vision and AI techniques of calculating agricultural and other landscape surfaces.
