Women Ageing. Literature and Experience

The Art of Ageing: Textualising the Phases of Life

This book explores the way older women are represented in society. Through close readings of novels by major 20th century novelists, compared with the more dominant representations of female ageing to be found in popular culture it suggests that they offer a feminist understanding of the 'invisible' woman sometimes lacking in feminism itself.

The polemics of Ageing as reflected in Literatures. Essays on Ageing in Literature and Interviews with Vikram Chandra, James Halperin, Doris Lessing, Zadies Smith and Terri-ann White

Prime Time.

Ageing is an extremely personal process everybody cares about. In our contemporary world, it can also become a truly enriching adventure. Prime Time is a comedy that invites us to think of age identity, and especially of how we really wish to live our later years. Written by the ageing-studies scholar Núria Casado-Gual, this play premiered in October 2016 in Barcelona (Catalonia) at the closing conference of the European project "SIforAge". Its original production, by the company Nurosfera, received very successful performances at several Catalan theatres for more than one year.

The Seventh Age of Man

The Seventh Age of Man: Issues, Challenges, and Paradoxes is a collection of academic essays on Old Age. The contributors come from a wide range of fields of expertise, which accounts for the originality of the book. Depending on their respective disciplines, the authors resort to various methodological approaches, from sociological case studies to discourse analysis, and from historical and political theories to media criticism, but they often address similar questions – when are people to be considered as old, what does it mean to be old, how do we deal with ageing – and reach similar conclusions about the paradoxical representations of the elderly, whether in Renaissance Europe or in ...

Emblems of Adversity

The essays collected in Emblems of Adversity: Essays on the Aesthetics of Politics in W. B. Yeats and Others hinge on the question of political articulation in Yeats’s poetry. Politics and history are paramount to our understanding of the Yeatsian poetic text. They are inextricable from the poet's aesthetic philosophy. Yet politics manifests itself in a complex and complicated form in his work. It articulates itself both consciously and unconsciously. It is at once latent and manifest; appropriated and yet rejected; unambiguously announced in the title but immediately muffled in the corpus. Additionally, political articulation in Yeats’s poetry is multifarious, insofar as the biographica...

Historical Dictionary of Asian American Literature and Theater

Asian American literature is one of the most recent forms of ethnic literature and is already becoming one of the most prominent, given the large number of writers, the growing ethnic population from the region, the general receptivity of this body of work, and the quality of the authors. In recent decades, there has been an exponential growth in their output and much Asian American literature has now achieved new levels of popular success and critical acclaim. Nurtured by rich and long literary traditions from the vast continent of Asia, this literature is poised between the ancient and the modern, between the East and West, and between the oral and the written. The Historical Dictionary of...
