This collection of original essays pays tribute to the man by exploring topics that have interested him through a long and productive career. Plato's mathematical imagery, his theory of perception, the role of engineering techne in the origin of Greek science, time and free will in Kant, Whitehead as teacher of teachers, mapping friendships, Kierkegaard and the necessity of forgery. These and other topics are given fresh treatments meant to stimulate further philosophical thinking in the spirit of Brumbaugh himself.

Discipleship or Pilgrimage?

Discipleship or Pilgrimage?

Discipleship or Pilgrimage? is an interpretive history of the field of educational philosophy—what it's been, where it is now, and what it ought to be. Implicit in Johnson's analysis is the belief that educational philosophy will not survive much longer. For educational philosophers to become significant players in the reconstruction of our educational system, they must focus on the classroom, both as instructors in the university classroom and as members of teams preparing prospective teachers. By focusing on the educational philosopher as pilgrim—as an educator engaged in an unending quest for meaning—the author suggests that it is not too late to reconstruct the field.

Based on the latest research, thirteen contributions by leading experts in the field provide an overview of John of Salisbury’s place in the political debates that marked the reign of Henry II in England as well as of his place in the history of the Church. They also offer a detailed introduction to his philosophical works (Metalogicon, Entheticus), his political thought (Policraticus) and his writing of history (Historia pontificalis). Contributors include Julie Barrau, David Bloch, Karen Bollermann, Cédric Giraud, Christophe Grellard, Laure Hermand-Schebat, Frédérique Lachaud, Constant Mews, Clare Monagle, Cary Nederman, Ronald Pepin, Yves Sassier, and Sigbjørn Sønnesyn.

In Philosophers as Educators Brian Patrick Hendley argues that philosophers of education should reject their preoccupation with defining terms and analyzing concepts and embrace the philosophical task of constructing general theories of education. Hendley discusses in detail the educational philosophies of John Dewey, Bertrand Russell, and Alfred North Whitehead. He sees in these men excellent role models that contemporary philosophers might well follow. Hendley believes that, like these mentors, philosophers should take a more active, practical role in education. Dewey and Russell ran their own schools, and Whitehead served as a university administrator and as a member of many committees created to study education.

"Smash-mouth politics, racial violence, immigrant-bashing, drug abuse, crummy health care, high-tech wizardry, greed, sex, graft -- and football. Sounds like last night's television newsmagazine, doesn't it? Just one small technical problem: We're not talking now. This is about then. . ." So begins THE LAST TURN, Lee Seglem's thought-provoking and thoroughly readable examination of trends, attitudes and daily life in America when the nation last crossed the great temporal divide between centuries. While much ink and many computer bytes (and sound bites) have been spilled in recent years in a headlong rush to peer into the new millennium, this book takes a reflective, and refreshing, look backward. What really happened during the years that bridged the 19th and 20th Centuries? How far have Americans really come? Fair warning to those who cling to a belief in the mythic "good old days": THE LAST TURN provides a provocative, surprising and entertaining look at some very real, and often disturbing, parallels in time.

From 1895, the year he published his first signed article, to four days before his death in 1970 when he wrote his last, Bertrand Russell was a powerful force in the world of mathematics, philosophy, human rights and the struggle for peace. During those years he published 70 books, almost as many pamphlets and over 2,000 articles, he also contributed pieces to some 200 books. The availability of the Bertrand Russell Archives at McMaster University since 1968 has made it possible for the first time to compile a full, descriptive bibliography of his writings. The Collected Papers are based on it. Fully annotated, the Bibliography is textually oriented and will guide the scholar, collector and general reader to the authoritative editions of Russell's works. It includes references to the locations of all known speeches and interviews, and reproductions of the dust-jackets of Russell's books. Blackwell, Ruja and Turcon have cooperated for nearly 20 years on the new Bibliography. Lord Russell saw the extensive additions for it near the end of his life and declared: `I am impressed.'
