Why Solange Matters

Growing up in the shadow of her superstar sister, Solange Knowles became a pivotal musician in her own right. Defying an industry that attempted to bend her to its rigid image of a Black woman, Solange continually experimented with her sound and embarked on a metamorphosis in her art that continues to this day. In Why Solange Matters, Stephanie Phillips chronicles the creative journey of an artist who became a beloved voice for the Black Lives Matter generation. A Black feminist punk musician herself, Phillips addresses not only the unpredictable trajectory of Solange Knowles's career but also how she and other Black women see themselves through the musician's repertoire. Laws of Desire

This is the first full-length study of homosexuality in contemporary Spanish writing and film. Prof. Smith charts the varying representations of the feminist or gay "self" in autobiographical texts by Chacel, Goytisolo, and Terenci Moix; goes on to offer radically new readings of trilogies by Goytisolo and Tusquets, the major novelists of homosexual desire in Spain, in the light of French theorists Hocquenghem and Wittig; and finally, offers a broadly historical account of Eloy de la Iglesia and Pedro Almodóvar, the two major gay auteurs of post-Franco film. Particular attention is paid to their use of cinematic form, and the book ends with an analysis of Almodóvar's ¡Átame! (Tie me up! Tie me down!)--a film which exemplifies the main argument of the book: that homosexuality is no unitary phenomenon, but rather a historical and libidinal construct inevitably inflected by gender, class, and regional identity.--From publisher description.

The remarkable photography collection of the University of New Mexico Art Museum owes its unique character and quality to the directors, curators, scholars, and artists who have taught, worked, and studied at the museum and in the university’s Department of Art and Art History. In this indispensable book, these distinguished scholars and artists reflect on the pictures from the collection that hold significance to them. Through their own professional and artistic practice, they represent different generations of aesthetic voices and intellectual directions. As one of the earliest collegiate institutions to begin collecting photography, the University of New Mexico Art Museum holds a stunning array of images that span photography’s 175-year history. In addition to iconic works by famous photographers, this book also features less familiar but equally masterful pictures. Together, these essays represent a unique history of photography and this renowned museum.

Alongside Greil Marcus, Nick Kent, and Lester Bangs, Ian Penman is one of the most important cultural critics of his generation. Long the star writer for Britain's NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS, Penman achieved something few music writers even dream of--he changed the way the subject was written about. VITAL SIGNS is the first collection of his writing.
