The Allegory of Female Authority
The first professional female writer, Christine de Pizan (1363-1431) was widowed at age twenty-five and supported herself and her family by enlisting powerful patrons for her poetry. Her Livre de la Cité des Dames (1405) is the earliest European work on women's history by a woman. An allegorical poem that revises masculine traditions, it asserts and defends the authority of women in general and of its author in particular. In this generously illustrated book, Maureen Quilligan provides a persuasive and penetrating interpretation of the Cité.

The Limbourg Brothers
Although the Nijmegen artists Herman, Paul and Jean de Limbourg were barely thirty years old when they suddenly died in 1416, they already had a formidable career behind them. Now, almost six hundred years after their creation, the colourful and highly refined miniatures in the Belles Heures and Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry still speak vividly to our imagination. In 2005 Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen presented the exhibition ‘The Limbourg Brothers. Nijmegen Masters at the French Court (1400-1416)’. This was the first time that original miniatures from four manuscripts by the Limbourg brothers were shown in the Netherlands. The exhibition formed an excellent opportunity to invite prominent scholars to share their views on the art of the Limbourg brothers during a two-day conference. This publication presents in written form the conference papers delivered by some of the leading scholars in the field. In that respect, the volume acts as an addendum to the catalogue. Contributors are Hanneke van Asperen, Gregory T. Clark, Herman Th. Colenbrander, Rob Dückers, Eberhard König, Margaret Lawson, Stephen Perkinson, Pieter Roelofs and Victor M. Schmidt.

In Vitreous Vitae: St. Margaret of Antioch in Thirteenth-Century Stained Glass, Ashley J. Laverock considers the representation of the virgin martyr St. Margaret in thirteenth-century stained-glass windows in Europe. These windows appeared at a moment when Margaret’s cult was expanding but before the motif of the saint with the ragon became normative. They offer insight into the rich narrative potential of Margaret’s life in a monumental medium seen by wide audiences. Examining these windows not only reveals shared emphases on Margaret’s imitatio Christi, corporeal suffering, and encounters with the dragon and demon, but also shows how distinct site-specific hagiographies of Margaret were tailored to each church’s context. Multi-faceted Margarets contributed to the wider cult of the saint.
