I Am Anchored in Christ; Bring on Euroclydon

How do we sail calmly in the voyage of Christian life in a bitter, corrupt and calloused world? For our journey and delineating the courses for our destinies, believers need to know how to hold the ship of their faith steady. We need to know how to drop anchor into Lord Jesus Christ, his word, his promises, and his grace. All too often, it is not until we reach the middle of our journeys that we realise how anchor savvy we actually are. It is here we discover if our anchor into God is an untested theory or a living phenomenon. Lucky for the believers, this book is a wake-up call to the modern church to see how anchored they are in the infallible, undiluted Gospel of the truth.

Lumumba in the Arts

  • Categories: Art

Lumumba as a symbol of decolonisation and as an icon in the arts It is no coincidence that a historical figure such as Patrice Emery Lumumba, independent Congo’s first prime minister, who was killed in 1961, has lived in the realm of the cultural imaginary and occupied an afterlife in the arts. After all, his project remained unfinished and his corpse unburied. The figure of Lumumba has been imagined through painting, photography, cinema, poetry, literature, theatre, music, sculpture, fashion, cartoons and stamps, and also through historiography and in public space. No art form has been able to escape and remain indifferent to Lumumba. Artists observe the memory and the unresolved sufferin...

Reclaiming the Women of Britain’s First Mission to Africa is the compelling story of three long-forgotten women, two white and one black, who lived, worked and died on the Church Missionary Society’s first overseas mission at the dawn of the nineteenth century. It was a time of momentous historical events: the birth of Britain’s missionary movement, the creation of its first African colony as a home for freed slaves, and abolition of the slave trade. Casting its long shadow over much of the women’s story was the protracted war with Napoleon. Taking as its starting point a cache of fifty letters from the three women, the book counters the prevailing narrative that early missionary endeavour was a uniquely European and male affair, and reveals the presence of a surprising number of women, among them several with very forceful personalities. Those who are interested in women’s life history, black history, the history of the slave trade and British evangelism will find this book immensely enjoyable.

Argues, contrary to most scholarly opinion, that while on the explicit level they are anti-Jewish, in a covert manner the dramatic works of the Spanish Golden Age present a positive image of the Jews. Works by Rojas, Cervantes, and, especially, Lope de Vega are shown to have used coded writing and techniques of dissimulation to subvert the dominant anti-Jewish ideology of the day, embodied in the actions of the Inquisition and in the "limpieza de sangre" statutes. A reason for the indirect approach was that the writers, who were influenced by Christian Humanism rather than by any putative Converso origin, themselves sought to escape interrogation by the Inquisition. One technique used was to replace the Converso by the figure of a persecuted woman or by a biblical, legendary, or foreign Jew. Defending the Jews was an aspect of espousal of justice for all.

“Closure” in grief a mythical finish line

“Closure in grief: A Mythical Finish Line” offers a fresh perspective on the concept of closure in the context of grief. In this insightful and empathetic book, the author challenges the commonly held belief that closure means leaving grief behind and getting back to a "normal" life. Instead, the author argues that closure is a process, not a defined moment, and that it involves accepting the reality of the loss while still honoring the memory of the loved one. Drawing on personal experience and extensive research, Closure in Grief offers practical guidance on how to navigate the complex emotions and challenges of grief. With compassion and wisdom, the author explores the many facets of closure and provides insights that will resonate with anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the process of grief and find a path towards healing and growth. It is a powerful reminder that closure is not a finish line to be crossed, but a journey to be embraced with openness and compassion.
