Lavishly illustrated, Ancient Bronzes of the Eastern Eurasian Steppes is the first major volume devoted to the study of the art of the Northern Zone. It includes a dramatic account of the Western medical workers and teachers who first collected these works early in the twentieth century, as well as an up-to-date account of Chinese excavations in the area, based on notes by the eminent Chinese archeologist Wu En. The papers in this volume derive from the proceedings of the nineteenth International Bronze Congress, held at the Getty Center and Villa in October 2015 in connection with the exhibition Power and Pathos: Bronze Sculpture of the Hellenistic World. The study of large-scale ancient bronzes has long focused on aspects of technology and production.
