The Conference on Computers in Physics Instruction

Computers are revolutionizing activities in all areas of life. Physics researchers, accustomed to being at the forefront of technology, have been deeply affected by the computer revolution. This effect has serious implications for what is taught and how it is taught in the physics classroom. This conference was organized to allow physics teachers and software developers in physics education to come together and see the state of the art in using computers to teach physics. The conference included 39 invited lectures and 122 contributed presentations. It introduced a number of innovations in the hope of increasing interactions and stimulating future contacts. This document contains the text of...

One Small Step

Purdue University has played a leading role in providing the engineers who designed, built, tested, and flew the many aircraft and spacecraft that so changed human progress during the 20th century. It is estimated that Purdue has awarded 6% of all BS degrees in aerospace engineering, and 7% of all PhDs in the United States during the past 65 years. The University's alumni have led significant advances in research and development of aerospace technology, have headed major aerospace corporations and government agencies, and have established an amazing record for exploration of space. More than one third of all US manned space flights have had at least one crew member who was a Purdue engineering graduate (including the first and last men to step foot on the moon). The School of Aeronautics & Astronautics was founded as a separate school within the College of Engineering at Purdue University in 1945. The first edition of this book was published in 1995, at the time of the school's 50th anniversary. This corrected and expanded second edition brings the school's illustrious history up to date, and looks to Purdue's future in the sky and in space.

Newton's Principia revisited

PROBLEM. The treatise is devoted to the reconstruction of our 'instinctive beliefs' in classical mechanics and to present them 'as much isolated and as free from irrelevant additions as possible'. The same motivation has driven many authors since the publication of Newton's Principia. IMPORTANCE. Classical mechanics will remain the basic reference and tool for mechanics on terrestrial and planetary scale as well as the proto-theory of relativistic and quantum mechanics. But it can only serve its purpose if it is not considered as obsolete, but if its foundations and implications are understood and made 'absolutely' clear. METHOD. Based on the 'instinctive belief' that the foundations of clas...

Issues in Cyberspace

The technological phenomenon known as the Internet has revolutionized the way people work, play, consume, socialize—essentially the way humans interact in general. Along with unparalleled access to information and such cultural juggernauts as Facebook and YouTube, this technology also has given rise to cybercrime, malware, and a host of other issues as well. This comprehensive volume examines the beginnings of the Internet, the development of the various content and services within cyberspace, and the potential risks of operating within an increasingly interconnected world.

A detailed mathematical derivation of space curves is presented that links the diverse fields of superfluids, quantum mechanics, Navier-Stokes hydrodynamics, and Maxwell electromagnetism by a common foundation. The basic mathematical building block is called the theory of quantum torus knots (QTK).
