Curating and the Legacies of Colonialism in Contemporary Iberia
Combining postcolonial studies, curating and contemporary art, this book surveys the role played by artistic curatorship and contemporary art museums in the shaping of identities and cultural planning in contemporary Iberia. The book’s main hypothesis is that contemporary art has been pivotal in the construction of contemporary Iberia, a process marked by the attention paid (in heterogeneous, not always satisfactory ways) to the entanglement of the legacies of colonialism and the present-day status of Iberian territories as cosmopolitan societies now integrated in the European Union. We argue that, at least from the 1990s, curating emerged as a key activity for Iberian societies to display and configure an image of themselves as modern and fully integrated in the European cultural landscape. Such an image, however, had to cope with the legacies of colonialism and the profound socioeconomic transformations of these societies. This book is concerned with bringing together, while redefining and expanding, Iberian and curatorial studies.

The two-volume set LNCS 8258 and 8259 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 18th Iberoamerican Congress on Pattern Recognition, CIARP 2013, held in Havana, Cuba, in November 2013. The projects by artists and researchers in residency at the Spanish Academy in Rome. This publication, which accompanies the exhibition of the same name, curated by Manuel Blanco, brings together the projects made by the artists and researchers in residency at the Spanish Academy in Rome during the year 2015-2016. The works are explained through critical and descriptive essays and shown in more than 160 full-colour images in total. Both the book and the exhibition are the result of a new phase initiated by the Spanish Academy in Rome in the past few years, during which it has become a bustling laboratory of new knowledge and ideas, by encouraging and supporting innovative research and artistic production projects, such as the ones included in this publication. Livro destinado a muita polêmica e grande imprensa, esta reportagem, escrita como thriller policial, disseca a macabra trama – planejada e calculada com rara frieza pelo então maior goleiro do Brasil, Bruno, do Flamengo – que resultaria na morte da jovem Eliza Samudio, em junho de 2010. Nada escapa: num ritmo frenético, verdadeiramente cinematográfico, está tudo lá, desde a concepção da armadilha que capturaria a modelo, a execução do sequestro e o desaparecimento da jovem até o teatro dos julgamentos e a condenação dos responsáveis.
