In 1987 Charles Atkins was struck with Hodgkin s disease and underwent the ravages of chemo- and radiation therapy. Throughout his illness he used his Buddhist training and the power of the mantra Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to carry him through the cancer treatments and allay his fear of death and doubts for recovery. During his stays in the hospital, he took every possible opportunity to comfort other cancer patients. His survival inspired him to share with others the healing techniques he has learned.Atkins introduces us to the Buddhist master Nichiren Daishonin (1222-1281) and the healing teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha as laid out in the Lotus Sutra. Atkins explains how Nam-myoho-renge-kyo can be used to undo karma that has damaged our health. His example along with that of many others struggling with diseases as diverse as fibromyalgia, diabetic ulcers, breast cancer, high blood pressure, and mental illness provides a beacon of hope for those facing illness. Atkins s book shows that with hope, faith, and prayer nothing is impossible.

Traditional Pali Chants (English)

Foreword Lord Buddha’s teachings have been preserved for centuries through oral transmission by means of recitation. Since the Dhamma were not recorded in writing, disciples assembled regularly to recite together in concord. Variations in individual memories were not allowed to obscure the Buddha’s words. While chanting, devotees contemplate the Dhamma with peaceful minds, free from other tasks. Chanting also requires deep concentration. It is part of daily Dhamma practice. Thus, monks in every monastery routinely assemble to chant the words of the Buddha together in group recitation. I am extremely delighted to have this ‘Traditional Pali Chants in English’ Book. It will permit inte...

Chanting the Medicine Buddha Sutra

This edition, comprising a sound recording, transcription, and English translation, provides a record of the Liberation Rite of Water and Land as a resource for the study, analysis, and further exploration of both the Medicine Buddha Sutra and the accompanying liturgical service. The editor created it at the invitation of Fo Guang Shan monastery, and it outlines both the textual and musical elements of the service. Designed as a chantbook, it is intended to be a tool for all those who wish to participate in the vocal elements of the service, from the uninitiated monastery visitor to musical ensembles that might use these musical fragments as inspiration for appropriately staged performances. It is especially conceived for non-Chinese speaking monastics in the Buddhist college and/or those who have experience reading Western musical notation.

"This lavishly illustrated book investigates an outstanding eighteenth-century example of a samut khoi, a type of beautiful folding book found in Southeast Asia, which became particularly popular as a repository for the Buddha's teachings. Written in Pali and produced in the Kingdom of Siam, its finely executed pictures, painted on khoi paper, show key incidents from stories of the past lives of the Buddha as he prepares for Buddhahood. These tales, historically one of the principal means whereby Buddhist teachings were communicated, known as Jatakas, are a favourite theme for manuscript art. Uniquely for such manuscripts, however, this samut khoi also offers an extensive series of scenes fr...
