Focusing on government-organized relocations of street vendors in Indonesia, Shadow Play carefully exposes the reasons why conflicts over urban planning are fought through information politics. Anthropologist Sheri Lynn Gibbings shows that information politics are the principal avenues through which the municipal government of Yogyakarta city seeks to implement its urban projects. Information politics are also the primary means through which street vendors, activists, and NGOs can challenge these plans. Through extensive interviews and lengthy participant observation in Yogyakarta, Gibbings shows that both state and non-state actors engage in transparency, rumours, conspiracies, and surveillance practices. Gibbings reveals that these entangled information practices create suspicion and fear, form new solidarities, and dissolve relationships. Shadow Play is a compelling study explaining how we cannot understand urban projects in post-Suharto Indonesia and the resistance to them without first understanding the complexities embedded in the information practices.
Most discourse research follows either of the three major paradigms (positivistic, constructivistic, and critical) in the four domains of analysis which encompass rules and principles, contexts and cultures, and functions and structures, as well as power and politics. Discourse domains reflect which area the investigation is primarily concerned with or focused on. Yet still the analysis of discourse is not confined by and limited to the above framework. At risk of sounding repetitive, it must once more be stressed that a discourse analysis concerns practically with any form of texts; be it written, spoken or visual, etc. A written and oral discourse, both viewed as a language and social reality can be portrayed, investigated, and analyzed by deploying various research approaches. These approaches include (despite being not limited to): (1) Content Analysis, (2) Grounded Theory, (3) Ethnography of communication, (4) Genre Analysis, (5) Ethnomethodological Conversation Analysis (CA), (6) Semiotic, (7) Pragmatics, (8) Critical discourse analysis (CDA), (9) Functional Pragmatic Method, (10) Hermeneutics, (11) Mediated, and (12) Multimodal approaches.
This book deals with one of the main environmental challenges in Indonesia, namely the processing of solid waste. As a case, the study focuses on household waste management in the city of Semarang in Central Java. Semarang still uses the end of pipe system. Waste is brought to temporary disposal sites (TDSs) and from there to a final disposal site (FDS). The poor urban waste management evidently does not only result in a negative impact on human life and the environment but also constitutes a geographical problem. This is because the negative impact of disposal sites will affect those living in the immediate vicinity. The extent of the burden or benefit, of the sites, will vary according to the site location. Further to this, within a specific population group, households will be unequally exposed to some burdens depending on their proximity to the disposal site, gender (women will usually suffer more), age and social group. Frequently poor people are the most vulnerable party who will receive the burden of the disposal site rather than its benefit.
Our Plastic Problem and How to Solve It considers plastic's harms and offers a spectrum of public and private solutions.
This open access book presents the state-of-the-art environmental governance research and practices in Indonesia. It offers a wide scope, covering different sectors (e.g., forestry, mining) and geographical landscapes (e.g., inland and coastal areas). This book engages with existing theories and frameworks, including Earth System Governance, Adaptive and Interactive Governance, among others to trigger a debate regarding the operationalization of such concepts, which are mostly developed for the Global North context. It is also our ambition to incorporate more empirical knowledge from local contexts to indicate research gaps and future directions for environmental governance research agenda t...
Batam’s economic transformation has been accompanied by a marked degradation of its natural environment. Enforcement to protect the environment has often been inadequate on many fronts, exacerbated by population increases. Though regulations exist for the provision of public amenities like wastewater and sewerage treatment, existing facilities are run-down and ill-equipped to cope with the present demands. The capacity of reservoirs to meet the present demand for water is also strained because of the large population base, with illegal intrusion and squatters further threatening supplies. Economic and environmental imperatives can be reconciled if more emphasis and resources are put into enforcing regulations and protecting the environment.
