Buku “Catatan Masa Lalu untuk Menyiasati Masa Depan” ini memuat 138 artikel yang ditulis dalam periode 1978–2014 dalam bahasa Indonesia, Inggris dan Jerman. Artikel-artikel itu merupakan telaah tentang berbagai masalah hubungan internasional, politik, hukum, hak asasi manusia, kebudayaan dan filsafat. Banyak diantara telaah itu masih sangat relevan.
