Rapport sur la situation de l'archéologie urbaine en Europe

A collection of reports on the situation of urban archaeology in 22 European countries. All the reports of the situation in the seperate countries give amongst others attention to definitions of urban archaeology, to previous research, databases, maps and evaluation techniques in the field, to the legal framework, financial support and numbers, status and qualifications of those who work in urban archaeology, to the balance between preservation and use, the contribution of urban archaeology to education and the understanding of the historic environment. The book is the result of decisions made during the 3th International Conference of Ministers responsible for the cultural heritage, held in Malta in 1992, where the revised European Convention on the protection of the Archaeological Heritage was signed. To promote the implementation of this convention the ministers recommend a number of actions which together might form a 'European Archaeology'. This handbook was one of those actions.

Architecture and Landscape in Medieval Anatolia, 1100-1500

Anatolia was home to a large number of polities in the medieval period. Given its location at the geographical and chronological juncture between Byzantines and the Ottomans, its story tends to be read through the Seljuk experience. This obscures the multiple experiences and spaces of Anatolia under the Byzantine empire, Turko-Muslim dynasties contemporary to the Seljuks, the Mongol Ilkhanids, and the various beyliks of eastern and western Anatolia. This book looks beyond political structures and towards a reconsideration of the interactions between the rural and the urban; an analysis of the relationships between architecture, culture and power; and an examination of the region's multiple g...

Sagalassos I

Sagalassos, once the metropolis of the Western Taurus range (Pisidia, Turkey), was only thoroughly surveyed in 1884 and 1885 by an Austrian team directed by K. Lanckoronski. In 1986-1989 this work was resumed by a British-Belgian team co-directed by Dr. Stephen Mitchell (University College of Swansea) and by Prof. Dr. Marc Waelkens (Catholic University of Leuven). In 1990 Sagalassos became a full scale Belgian project and a leading center for interdisciplinary archaeological and archaeometrical research. Due to its altitude, the site is one of the best preserved towns from classical antiquity, with a rich architectural and sculptural tradition dating from the second century BC to the sixth c...

Immigrants

Immigration divides our globalizing world like no other issue. We are swamped by illegal immigrants and infiltrated by terrorists, our jobs stolen, our welfare system abused, our way of life destroyed--or so we are told. At a time when National Guard units are deployed alongside vigilante Minutemen on the U.S.-Mexico border, where the death toll in the past decade now exceeds 9/11's, Philippe Legrain has written the first book about immigration that looks beyond the headlines. Why are ever-rising numbers of people from poor countries arriving in the United States, Europe, and Australia? Can we keep them out? Should we even be trying? Combining compelling firsthand reporting from around the w...

In the belief that power is something that is negotiated by participants in the instructional process and with the goal of understanding how communication and power interact, this book looks at power and instruction in many different ways. Drawing from the lessons of the social sciences generally, it examines research that has been conducted by instructional communication specialists, looks at newer approaches to power, presents a status report on what is now known, and points to the divergent directions that offer opportunities for future scholarship.

Pepouza and Tymion

Early Christianity varied in appearance as much as the geography and terrain of the ancient Middle East. Often "variety" became pitted against "orthodoxy." Montanism, or the New Prophecy, was founded by a Phrygian named Montanus along with two ecstatic prophetesses, Maximilla and Priscilla. Even the North African Church Father Tertullian was a supporter of the New Prophecy movement. The Montanist variety of Christianity, however, soon fell into disfavor by those later deemed "orthodox", also because women played an influential role in this movement. Today we know about Montanism only partially and that mainly from the writings of its Christian rivals. One tenet of Montanism was the belief th...
