Public and private, traffic and open space, planned and spontaneous - our idea of a city is characterised by opposites. However, the contributors to this bilingual book show that these poles can also be consciously connected. The urban building blocks from São Paolo present surprisingly idiosyncratic city scenes: People dancing along the motorway, strolling through the stone archipelago, splashing around in front of the city skyline Many of the case studies are linked to the ideas of the Brazilian urban planner Francisco Prestes Maia. As early as in the 1930s, he developed concepts that combine traffic, open space and architecture - a surprisingly contemporary approach. Öffentliches und Pr...

Going beyond performing simple analyses, researchers involved in the highly dynamic field of computational intelligent data analysis design algorithms that solve increasingly complex data problems in changing environments, including economic, environmental, and social data. Computational Intelligent Data Analysis for Sustainable Development presents novel methodologies for automatically processing these types of data to support rational decision making for sustainable development. Through numerous case studies and applications, it illustrates important data analysis methods, including mathematical optimization, machine learning, signal processing, and temporal and spatial analysis, for quant...
The importance of didactic training in conference interpreting has become the subject of increased discussion. This collective volume provides overviews of theories and examples of training practices and tools for a didactic approach to the development of interpreting competence. This book is geared towards new institutions offering interpreter training, teachers just starting out in conference interpreter training and who lack experience, as well as experienced interpreter training practitioners who may be interested in theory-based training. This volume does not aim to present in-depth scientific theories. Individual theoretical perspectives are discussed where they provide the basis for a specific application in interpreter training. The contributions are meant to serve as suggestions to provide a new perspective on various topics.
A recent study in the field of comparative economics (or, more precisely, numerical comparative law) constructed an index of procedural formalism of dispute resolution for more than 100 countries and analyzed the relationship between procedural formalism and certain aspects of quality of the judicial systems. The study's results suggest a strong relationship between legal origins, formalism, and the quality of dispute resolution. Not surprisingly, the study closes with a recommendation for reform. What makes this study so important is not only its findings, backed by an amount of data which seems to be a guarantee for the study's universal validity, but also the financial support of the Worl...

Was ist gute Landschaftsarchitektur? What is good landscape architecture? — Undine Giseke, Norbert Kühn, Cordula Loidl-Reisch, and Jürgen Weidinger provide answers to this question, examining the concepts of urban metabolism, designing urban nature, suitability for daily use, and atmosphere. Their articles seek to bring clarity and provide inspiration for design work. This characterizes a special form of reflection that is referred to here as landscape-architectural thinking.
