C.P. Lewis: The Champion Cricketer of South Wales

Charles Prytherch Lewis (1853-1923), quick bowler and hard hitting batsman, played an important part in the rise of Welsh cricket, despite his background in rural Carmarthenshire, away from big towns and cities. From Llandovery he went on to play for Oxford University, in 1876, at a time when that ancient institution supplied top cricketers, athletes and footballers (in two codes), to the world. He took seven for 35 in his first-ever first-class match, and was one of the first Welshmen to play for Oxford. Returning to Llandovery, he enthused cricketers and rugby players, and built up the College into a formidable sporting force. He himself played for the South Wales Cricket Club, Glamorganâ€...

New perspectives on the central middle ages in western Europe cover a wide range of issues. Six papers reassess how "feudalism" is to be understood after Susan Reynolds's Fiefs and Vassals; in addition to her own response to reviews of her book, these are: consideration of the Germanic comitatus; "feudal" vocabulary in Dudo of Saint-Quentin; the titles of the early rulers of Normandy; the rise of territorial lordships in the principality of Salerno; and a broad comparative study of "military lands" in the early and central middle ages. The other five papers range over early Anglo-Saxon reuse of Roman artefacts; the exploitation of whales in early medieval Britain; Edward the Confessor's clerks; Abbot Faricius of Abingdon; and wage-rates in late twelfth- and early thirteenth-century England. Dr C.P. LEWIS is a lecturer in the School of History at the University of Liverpool. Contributors SUSAN REYNOLDS, STEVEN FANNING, FELICE LIFSHITZ, ROBERT HELMERICHS, VALERIE RAMSEYER, BERNARD S. Compelling Reason

‘You can only find out the rights and wrongs by Reasoning – never by being rude about your opponent’s psychology.’ For C. S. Lewis, reason and logic are the sensible way to approach faith and ethics. Much of the 20th century’s ills are caused by ill-founded beliefs and opinions.

The Negro Southern League was a baseball minor league that operated off and on from 1920 to 1951. It served as a valuable feeder system to the Negro National League and the Negro American League. A number of NNL and NAL stars got their start in the NSL, among them five Hall of Famers including Satchel Paige and Willie Mays. During its history, more than 80 teams were members of the league, representing 40 cities in a dozen states. In the end only four teams remained, operating more as semipro than professional teams. This book is a narrative history of the league from its inception with eight teams in major Southern cities until its demise three decades later.
