This volume argues through a series of selected local studies, for the importance of "textual criticism" as a fundamental act of historical interpretation and recovery, pointing out the need for attention to the physical bearers of our knowledge of the English Middle Ages, the books themselves, and the ignored and alienating features of manuscript culture. The book begins with three essays that seek to problematize medieval book production, to show the procedure as more a fluid and emergent than a foreplanned process. The following two essays provide theoretical statements about the textual uses of manuscripts.

This unique Middle English text, not previously published, of the immensely popular story of Charlemagne's Spanish wars and defeat at Roncevaux, has only recently been discovered. It is one of the earliest prose romances, pre-dating Sir Thomas Malory's Morte D'Artur by more than a decade. This version testifies to a distinctive British tradition of the Charlemagne story. The manuscript's history locates the text in Lancastrian and regional politics of the mid-fifteenth century.

Examining works by some of the most famous prisoners from the early modern period including Thomas More, Lady Jane Grey and Thomas Wyatt, Ruth Ahnert presents the first major study of prison literature dating from this era. She argues that the English Reformation established the prison as an influential literary sphere. In the previous centuries we find only isolated examples of prison writings, but the religious and political instability of the Tudor reigns provided the conditions for the practice to thrive. This book shows the wide variety of genres that prisoners wrote, and it explores the subtle tricks they employed in order to appropriate the site of the prison for their own agendas. Ahnert charts the spreading influence of such works beyond the prison cell, tracing the textual communities they constructed, and the ways in which writings were smuggled out of prison and then disseminated through script and print.
This study is the first detailed exploration of the events and personalities that inspired the early eleventh-century Saint-Vaast Bible's highly innovative miniature program. Copied and illuminated in the venerable abbey of Saint-Vaast, Arras, the Bible broadcast the political and theological beliefs of Bishop Gerard of Cambrai and Abbot Richard of Saint-Vanne, who cooperated in the sometimes contentious reform of a series of abbeys throughout Flanders. While the miniature program defended royal and episcopal hegemony and highlighted the importance of cooperation between secular and ecclesiastical government, the layout of the Bible facilitated continuous reading during the monastic Office. Illustrated with 46 figures and 10 color plates, this book introduces one of the earliest and most important Romanesque Giant Bibles.
Playing the Canterbury Tales addresses the additions, continuations, and reordering of the Canterbury Tales found in the manuscripts and early printed editions of the Tales. Many modern editions present a specific set of tales in a specific order, and often leave out an entire corpus of continuations and additions. Andrew Higl makes a case for understanding the additions and changes to Chaucer's original open and fragmented work by thinking of them as distinct interactive moves in a game similar to the storytelling game the pilgrims play.
