Examine the world's leading aquaculture producers! Sustainable Aquaculture: Global Perspectives is a one-of-a-kind primer on the world's leading sources of aquatic production, presenting expert commentary that includes the latest advancements, developments, and research findings. The book examines essential elements of aquaculture (water quality, nutrition, genetics, culture methods) and addresses problems such as over-fishing, coastal and wetland destruction, and habitat and environmental degradation. Sustainable Aquaculture: Global Perspectives addresses policy measures that are essential for the long-term sustainability of the world's fisheriesand the long-term employment of those who rel...
A comprehensive study of sex differentiation gonochoric and hermaphroditic fishes, this book examines sex chromosomes and sex determining genes, emphasizing the need to search for more than one sex-determining gene residing on different chromosomes. It traces the origin of hermaphrodites from secondary gonochores and explains the conservation of homologous sex differentiation and steroid receptor genes among gonochores and hermaphrodites. The author identifies the optimal broodstock size and the appropriate candidate species for bait. He shows that the analysis of steriles and mutants has demonstrated the value of fishes as a system for genetic dissection of human development and diseases.
This book provides new insights into the universality of biological systems in animal reproduction and development by a comparative study of a variety of mechanisms in animals ranging from basal invertebrates to vertebrates, including mammals. Animals accomplish genetic diversity through meiosis and fertilization, and during embryogenesis animals must produce specialized cell types, including germ cells, in accordance with their individual body plan. This series of phenomena is essential to the continuity of life in the animal kingdom, and animals show various reproductive and developmental strategies. This volume, comprising four parts, reviews animal kingdom diversity, including reproducti...
This volume, 9C, in two parts, covers the Brachyura. With the publication of the ninth volume in the Treatise on Zoology: The Crustacea, we departed from the sequence one would normally expect. Some crustacean groups, mainly comprising the Decapoda, never had a French version produced, and the organization and production of these “new” chapters began independently from the preparation of the other chapters and volumes. Originally envisioned to encompass volume 9 of the series, it quickly became evident that the depth of material for such a volume must involve the printing of separate fascicles. The new chapters have now been completed, and the production of volume 9 was started while volumes 3 through 8 were (and in part still are) in preparation; with this vol. 9C-I & II this volume 9 is now concluded; vols. 1-5 have also been published and vols. 6-8 are being prepared.
The book presents updated information on the cryopreservation of semen, embryos, germ cells and ovarian follicles of neotropical fish from South America. The chapters address the importance of developing germplasm banks of South American fish, both for commercial production and for conservation of ichthyofauna. This book has been designed mainly to provide a historical review of the 40 years of reproductive cryobiology research on South American fish species. The work is aimed at students, researchers and technicians involved in the areas related to the book's theme. The editors invite the readers to delve into dense technical knowledge, developed by renowned researchers.
To feed the growing world population, water is looked upon as a major source of food production. This book is an attempt to bring out a comprehensive volume on Fish Transgenesis, Chromosome Engineering and Sex Control, Molecular Endocrinology, Microbal Diseases and Vaccines, and Bioactive Compounds.
