This slender volume contains abstracts of the combined "First" Minute and Law Order Books of Cabell County, Virginia/West Virginia. Three-quarters of the cases are either debt (by bond, contract, or covenant) or assault and battery (with or without trespass). The assault and battery cases seem to appear after the elections and at the same time as indictments for selling liquor without a license (probably due to fights as the result of too much alcohol). There is one case of murder, one for larceny, and several for ejectment (removal of land holders due to overlapping land claims caused by Virginia's metes and bounds land system). Every effort has been made to include all the names recorded and the case information if listed. The abstracts are followed by an alphabetical list of jurors and their frequency of jury duty.

Cabell County, West Virginia Annals and Families.

By: Georeg Selden Wallacer, Pub. 1935, Reprinted 2018, 608 pages, Index, ISBN #0-89308-950-8 Cabell county was formed in 1809 from Kanawha County. It sits on the western side of the state bordering Ohio and Kentucky. It sits only a few miles south of the one of the main migration routes of the 19th century of persons headed West in seach of land. This book is not too different from other county history books of this era. With such topics as trade and transportation, labor, farming, politics, and race relations - all important in the development of the county - are carefully discussed. This type of county history book can help one develop ideas or paths to those missing ancestors by showing t...

Cabell County

Established in 1809, Cabell County is located in West Virginia's Mid-Ohio Valley. When rail tycoon Collis P. Huntington pushed the tracks of his Chesapeake & Ohio Railway across the mountains from Virginia into Cabell County, he founded the town that would become the county's great metropolitan center. Business and industry soon began to rise, and Cabell grew into one of the Mountain State's busiest, most populous regions. This dramatic history of Cabell County begins with the arrival of the area's first settlers and continues into the 21st century. Introduced are James Holderby, Peter Cline Buffington, John Hunt Oley, and the other venturesome souls who set in motion the forces that made Ca...
