Swarm Robotics

Swarm robotics can be defined as the study of how a swarm of relatively simple physically embodied agents can be constructed to collectively accomplish tasks that are beyond the capabilities of a single one. Unlike other studies on multi-robot systems, swarm robotics emphasizes self-organization and emergence, while keeping in mind the issues of scalability and robustness. These emphases promote the use of relatively simple robots, equipped with localized sensing ability, scalable communication mechanisms, and the exploration of decentralized control strategies. This state-of-the-art survey is the first book devoted to swarm robotics. It is based on the First International Workshop on Swarm Robotics held in Santa Monica, CA, USA in July 2004 as part of SAB 2004

Swarm Robotics

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 2nd SAB 2006 International Workshop on Swarm Robotics held in Rome, Italy in September/October 2006 as a satellite event of SAB 2006, the 9th Conference on Simulation of Adaptive Behavior. The 14 revised full papers are organized in topical sections on algorithms, modeling and analysis, hardware, and evolutionary approaches.

Space-Time Continuous Models of Swarm Robotic Systems

In this book, a generic model in as far as possible mathematical closed-formis developed that predicts the behavior of large self-organizing robot groups (robot swarms) based on their control algorithm. In addition, an extensive subsumption of the relatively young and distinctive interdisciplinary research field of swarm robotics is emphasized. The connection to many related fields is highlighted and the concepts and methods borrowed from these fields are described shortly.

Swarm Intelligence has recently emerged as a next-generation methodology belonging to the class of evolutionary computing. As a result, scientists have been able to explain and understand real-life processes and practices that previously remained unexplored. The Handbook of Research on Swarm Intelligence in Engineering presents the latest research being conducted on diverse topics in intelligence technologies such as Swarm Intelligence, Machine Intelligence, Optical Engineering, and Signal Processing with the goal of advancing knowledge and applications in this rapidly evolving field. The enriched interdisciplinary contents of this book will be a subject of interest to the widest forum of faculties, existing research communities, and new research aspirants from a multitude of disciplines and trades.

Cellular Robotics and Micro Robotic Systems

This book introduces interesting topics, from concepts to the latest research, on cellular and micro robotic systems. The cellular robotic system is a self-organizing robotic system composed of a large number of autonomous robotic units, named cells. This idea came from the organic structure of a living body. Several attractive topics in this area are covered, such as swarm intelligence, communications, and robotic mechanisms. The micro robotic system is currently the most fascinating technology. Micro mechanisms, control and intelligence, with respect to this system are treated here. The combination of both technologies will prepare the way for a new paradigm in the field of engineering.
