Calvin for Armchair Theologians

An introduction to the life and main teachings of John Calvin (1509-1564), this book blends Calvin's theology into the story of his life to provide those with no knowledge of the Genevan reformer with a concise picture of his key theological views. Illustrations illuminate the author's text.

Lifting Hearts to the Lord

Bringing together a rich range of primary sources -- images, liturgies, sermons, letters, eyewitness accounts, and Genevan consistory records -- this book examines worship as it was taught and practiced in John Calvin's Geneva. Several of these primary sources are translated into English for the first time, offering new resources for studying Calvin and his context. Karin Maag uses Geneva as a case study for investigating the theology and practice of worship in the Reformation era. Covering the period from 1541 to 1564, the year of Calvin's death, Lifting Hearts to the Lord captures both Calvin's signal contribution to Reformation worship and the voices of ordinary Genevans as they navigated -- and debated, even fought about -- the changes in worship resulting from the Reformation.

The Advances of Endoscopic Skull Base Tumor Surgery: from Basic to Clinical Research

For neurosurgeons, skull base neurosurgery is as complex, dangerous, challenging, and charming as Mount Everest. The vigorous development of neuroendoscopy has opened a new perspective for skull base neurosurgery. Due to the special structure of skull base, there are often "blind spots" left out by microscope, while neuroendoscopy is the promising technology to overcome the defects. With its minimally invasive advantages, neuroendoscopy is gradually becoming popular in neurosurgical operation. In recent years, neuroendoscopic surgery for pituitary adenoma, the anterior skull base and sellar turcica meningioma, clivus chordoma and tumors in the foramen magnum area have been reported, as well as for atlantoaxial lesions. Neuroendoscopy for skull base midline surgical area has attracted accumulating attention, and its application is widely used in basic and clinical research.

Calvinism’s influence and reputation have received ample scholarly attention. But how John Calvin himself – his person, character, and deeds – was remembered, commemorated, and memorialized, is a question few historians have addressed. Focussing on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, this volume aims to open up the subject with chapters on Calvin’s monumentalization in statues and museums, his appearance in novels, children’s books, and travel writing, his iconic function for Hungarian nationalists and Presbyterian missionaries to China, his reputation among Mormons and freethinkers, and his rivalry with Michael Servetus in French Protestant memory. The result is a fresh contribution to the field of religious memory studies and an invitation to further comparative research. Contributors include: R. Bryan Bademan, Patrick Cabanel, R. Scott Clark, Thomas J. Davis, Stephen S. Francis, Joe B. Fulton, Botond Gaál, Stefan Laube, Johan de Niet, Herman Paul, James Rigney, Michèle Sacquin, Jonathan Seitz, Robert Vosloo, Bart Wallet, and Valentine Zuber.

Trusting Calvin

Max Edelman was just 17 when the Nazis took him from his Jewish ghetto in Poland to the first of five work camps, where his only hope of survival was to keep quiet and raise an emotional shield. After witnessing a German Shepherd kill a fellow prisoner, he developed a lifelong fear of dogs. Later beaten into blindness by two bored guards, Max survived, buried the past, and moved on to a new life in America, becoming an X-ray technician. But when he retired, he needed help. He needed a guide dog. After a month of training, he received Calvin, a handsome, devoted chocolate Labrador retriever. Calvin guided Max safely through life, but he sensed the distance and reserve of Max’s emotional shi...

Truths about Evil, Sin, and the Demonic

Truths about Evil, Sin, and the Demonic

The Problem of Evil and the Predicament of Theodicy As Christians or theists we are moved to share the truth of God’s love for humankind. But how can we speak of such providential care in a world rife with crime, war, racism, genocide, and even ecocide? In response to this predicament, a theodicy proposes a rational “defense” of God’s goodness that offers consolation to victims and hope to all believers. Truths about Evil, Sin, and the Demonic provides a sweeping history of the discipline of theodicy that focuses on its strategic turning points and its possible future. Belitsos argues that, because of the atrocities of the last century and the threat of horrendous evils in the coming century, we need to marshal the most explanatory elements of all previous theodicies and then drive toward an “integrative” model based on a creative synthesis. The author also turns to a modern revelatory source that supports his argument for such a “meta-theodicy.” He concludes by critically engaging with this source and the entire tradition in his call for an apophatically informed integral theodicy.
