The Black Heavens

Winner, Lincoln Group of New York Award of Achievement 2019 From multiple personal tragedies to the terrible carnage of the Civil War, death might be alongside emancipation of the slaves and restoration of the Union as one of the great central truths of Abraham Lincoln’s life. Yet what little has been written specifically about Lincoln and death is insufficient, sentimentalized, or devoid of the rich historical literature about death and mourning during the nineteenth century. The Black Heavens: Abraham Lincoln and Death is the first in-depth account of how the sixteenth president responded to the riddles of mortality, undertook personal mourning, and coped with the extraordinary burden of...

German Immigrants

"This is the third volume of the German Immigrants series (see also Items 6580, 6581, and 6583), this one listing passengers from Bremen to New York between 1863 and September 1867. Owing to the total destruction of the original Bremen passenger lists, this volume, like the others, is the only practical means of discovering information on thousands of individuals for whom immigrant origin data was thought to be irretrievably lost. In effect, it is a partial reconstruction of the Bremen records, based on official passenger lists and manifests in the custody of the National Archives. It is, therefore, a record of arrivals rather than departures, and it is the closest we are ever likely to come to duplicating information in the lost Bremen records"--Publisher website (December 2007).

How can local libraries improve their services to better meet the needs and interests of the African American community? What cost-effective programs and services can libraries develop on an on-going basis, using existing funding, to contiue to serve the African-American community after the project has concluded?
