The impact of Christopher Columbus's first transatlantic voyage launched an unprecedented explosion of European exploration. Throughout the last 500 years, scholars have recognized this transforming event, and they have written extensively on the subject. To date, no American author has dedicated a book to Columbus's life before 1492. This biography does so, with a focus on geographical experiences that affected his formulation of a transatlantic concept. Incorporating extensive research from American and European scholars (historians, geographers, anthropologists, and cartographers), the author proposes that Columbus systematically built a transatlantic voyage proposal from knowledge gained on previous voyages in the Mediterranean Sea and Eastern Atlantic Ocean. The book's extensive use of maps place Columbus's actions on specific land and ocean locations. Rereading Travellers to the East
Rereading Travellers to the East aim to offer a new perspective on travel literature, the question of nation-building and the history of orientalism. Rereading Travellers focuses on the rereadings to which early modern travel literature about Asia has been subjected by different actors involved in the political, economic, cultural and intellectual life of post-unification Italy. The authors highlight how this literature has been reinterpreted and reused for political and ideological purposes in the context of the formation and reformation of collective identities, from the Risorgimento to the Fascist regime and the early republic. By showing the potential of the notion of rereading, the volume outlines a history of the political and cultural legacy of travel literature which goes well beyond Italy.

Massimo Quaini (1941-2017) è stato uno dei protagonisti della geografia. Un gruppo di studiosi gli dedica questo libro per continuare a dipanare, nel labirinto del mondo, il filo delle sue riflessioni, che hanno collocato la geografia tra le scienze del territorio per farne oggetto di impegno civile. Il suo pensiero critico, transdisciplinare, non ha mai riconosciuto confini ma solo feconde differenze di prospettiva: la sua più alta eredità sta forse in questo impulso a integrare competenze diverse (di storici, poeti, archeologi, ecologi, pianificatori…) per rimettere in valore i luoghi del mondo. Questo non è quindi il classico libro ‘in memoria’ sui temi di Quaini ma, oseremmo dire, un libro con Quaini.
