Herein is provided an overview of 40 projects created by European students of Architecture and Urban Design, completed between 2008 and 2010 and resulting from a set of 4 workshops which worked on the issue of inclusive urban design within different patrimonial urban centres that were characterized by steep and complex topography. This work was the result of an Erasmus Agreement in partnership with 8 European Universities and promoted by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC-BarcelonaTech), through the Càtedrad'Accessibilitat (CATAC) and the EscolaTècnica Superior d'Arquitectura del Vallès (ETSAV). Marta Bordas Eddy is an architect and PhD candidate by the Universitat Politècnica de Cataluna (UPC-BarcelonaTech) and the Tampere University of Technology (TUT). Her area of expertize is inclusive architectural design, and accessible urban planning. She has been a researcher at UPC-BarcelonaTech (2007-2011), adjunct professor at the University of Barcelona – UB (2012), and a researcher and teaching assistant at TUT currently.
Although studies of Modernism have focused largely on European nations, Spain has been conspicuously neglected. As Carol A. Hess argues in this compelling book, such neglect is wholly undeserved. Through composer Manuel de Falla (1876-1946), Hess explores the advent of Modernism in Spain in relation to political and cultural tensions prior to the Spanish Civil War. The result is a fresh view of the musical life of Spain that departs from traditional approaches to the subject and reveals an open and constantly evolving aesthetic climate.
This book presents a unique collection of contributions on modern topics in statistics and econometrics, written by leading experts in the respective disciplines and their intersections. It addresses nonparametric statistics and econometrics, quantiles and expectiles, and advanced methods for complex data, including spatial and compositional data, as well as tools for empirical studies in economics and the social sciences. The book was written in honor of Christine Thomas-Agnan on the occasion of her 65th birthday. Given its scope, it will appeal to researchers and PhD students in statistics and econometrics alike who are interested in the latest developments in their field.
It is difficult to imagine that the statistical analysis of compositional data has been a major issue of concern for more than 100 years. It is even more difficult to realize that so many statisticians and users of statistics are unaware of the particular problems affecting compositional data, as well as their solutions. The issue of ``spurious correlation'', as the situation was phrased by Karl Pearson back in 1897, affects all data that measures parts of some whole, such as percentages, proportions, ppm and ppb. Such measurements are present in all fields of science, ranging from geology, biology, environmental sciences, forensic sciences, medicine and hydrology. This book presents the his...
This book presents modern methods and real-world applications of compositional data analysis. It covers a wide variety of topics, ranging from an updated presentation of basic concepts and ideas in compositional data analysis to recent advances in the context of complex data structures. Further, it illustrates real-world applications in numerous scientific disciplines and includes references to the latest software solutions available for compositional data analysis, thus providing a valuable and up-to-date guide for researchers and practitioners working with compositional data. Featuring selected contributions by leading experts in the field, the book is dedicated to Vera Pawlowsky-Glahn on the occasion of her 70th birthday.
