The shipwreck of Santa Maria in Padovetere (Comacchio-Ferrara). Archaeology of a riverine barge of Late Roman period and of other recent finds of sewn boats
The 5th century AD barge of Santa Maria in Padovetere was discovered and investigated inside an ancient river, West of Comacchio. The place, which later hosted the parish of Santa Maria in Padovetere, is considered a strategic crossroads of Late Roman waterways. The anoxic conditions have well preserved the bottom and the entire right side. This extraordinary conservation, coupled with in situ digital documentation, has allowed the reconstruction in 3D of the entire shape of the shipwreck. It was a riverine flat bottom barge with a very high stern and a central long rudder according to a shipshape well documented by Central European Roman sculptures. Scientific analysis allowed to reconstruct the environment where it moved and to make hypotheses on the types of goods transported. This is a very rare example of an ancient riverine barge and an important evidence of the technique of construction by sewing. The book also presents other recent finds of this construction technique which, during the Roman period and the Early Middle Age, was used only in the Upper Adriatic.

Ships and Guns brings together experts from the field of historic artillery and underwater archaeologists to present a series of papers which focus on the development of naval ordnance in Europe and, especially, Venice, in the 15th-17th centuries, as exemplified by the maritime archaeological resource. Subjects include Venetian ordnance in shipwrecks of the Mediterranean and Atlantic, the race to develop big calibres in the first war of Morea, Genoese ordnance aboard galleys in the 16th century, the strategic logistics of guns at sea during the Spanish armada of 1588 and ships and guns of the Tudor navy. Often specialists in ordnance study artefacts recovered from wrecks without a complete knowledge of the archaeological context from which they have been recovered. Archaeologists investigating the context of the objects on the other hand, often do so with only a superficial knowledge of historic artillery. This volumes hopes to redress the balance, and also to present a large amount of information, often concerning little-known wrecks, on this important but under-published subject area.

Sveti Pavao Shipwreck
Between 2007 and 2012 the Department for Underwater Archaeology of the Croatian Conservation Institute from Zagreb and the Department of Humanistic Studies of the Ca' Foscari University of Venice collaborated in the recording, underwater excavation and analysis of the unusually well-preserved wreck of a 16th century Venetian merchantman in the Svetti Pavao shallow off the southern shore of the island of Mljet, Croatia. This volume gathers 88 contributions related to the theme ‘Ships and Maritime Landscapes’ of the Thirteenth International Symposium on Boat and Ship Archaeology (ISBSA 13) held in Amsterdam on the 7th to 12th October 2012. The articles include both papers and poster presentations by experts in the field of nautical archaeology, history of ships and shipbuilding, and naval architecture. The contributions deal not only with the theme of maritime landscapes but also with a variety of ship related subjects, like regional watercraft, construction and typology, material applications and design, outfitting, reconstruction and current research.

Archeologia dei relitti postmedievali / Archaeology of Post-Medieval Shipwrecks, a cura di Carlo Beltrame Il volume, che raccoglie undici contributi di archeologi marittimi di molti paesi, ha l’obiettivo di accendere i riflettori sulle enormi potenzialità dei relitti di età storica, mettendo a confronto, da un lato, approcci diversi (di ambito mediterraneo ma anche statunitense, australiano e nord europeo), dall’altro, contesti archeologici con caratteristiche altrettanto diverse per l’ambiente di giacitura e per l’impiego civile o militare dell’imbarcazione. Gli studi, diacronici ma incentrati sul Cinquecento e sull’Ottocento, coprono le varie sfaccettature dell’indagine storica dei relitti di età postmedievale quali la costruzione navale, il commercio e la vita di bordo, ma anche aspetti di tipo squisitamente metodologico quali l’archeologia sperimentale navale. Si tratta di una novità assoluta per l’editoria scientifica italiana in cui questo particolare, ma molto promettente, ambito della ricerca archeologica non aveva ancora trovato adeguato spazio.
