Puerto Rico in the American Century

Offering a comprehensive overview of Puerto Rico's history and evolution since the installation of U.S. rule, Cesar Ayala and Rafael Bernabe connect the island's economic, political, cultural, and social past. Puerto Rico in the American Century explores Puerto Ricans in the diaspora as well as the island residents, who experience an unusual and daily conundrum: they consider themselves a distinct people but are part of the American political system; they have U.S. citizenship but are not represented in the U.S. Congress; and they live on land that is neither independent nor part of the United States. Highlighting both well-known and forgotten figures from Puerto Rican history, Ayala and Ber...

Galilean Upstarts

This book is about Jesus' first followers in Palestine, those obscure upstarts responsible for gospel traditions that resulted from developments at the eastern end of the Mediterranean basin in the cradle of Syrian Christianity. Vaage sketches a social profile of these followers of Jesus, based on the literary stratum biblical scholars have designated as "Q", the other source text used by Matthew and Luke in the composition of the gospels.

This book brings together a complete set of approaches to works by female authors that articulate the black Atlantic in relation to the interplay of race, class, and gender. The chapters provide the grounds to (en)gender a more complex understanding of the scattered geographies of the African diaspora in the Atlantic basin. The variety of approaches displayed bears witness to the vitality of a field that, over the years, has become a diasporic formation itself as it incorporates critical insights and theoretical frameworks from multiple disciplines in the social sciences and the humanities, thus exposing the manifold character of (black) diasporic interconnections within and beyond the Atlan...

THE WIRE is one of the most critically acclaimed drama series in the history of television. Over its five seasons it built up a rich and layered portrait of Baltimore: its hardened police force, its corner boys, its dock workers and its politicians. The Wire: Truth Be Told brings the reader inside this world: packed with photographs and featuring an introduction by David Simon, it covers all five seasons in glorious detail.
