Throughout his prolific career as a photographer, Emmet Gowin has threaded together seemingly disparate subjects - his wife, Edith, and their extended family; American and European landscapes; aerial views of environmental devastation - that reflect his ongoing interest in issues of scale, the impact of the individual, and notions of belonging. This long-awaited survey, Emmet Gowin pays tribute to Gowin's remarkable career and his impact on the medium. Following his marriage to Edith Morris in 1964, Gowin began work on a series of images of his extended family. His focus broadened in the 1980s, when he began an exploration of landscape and aerial photography. He has since photographed in the Czech Republic, Italy, Mexico, Japan, and the United States.--

This work makes both a historical and legal analysis of the process leading up to the 1973 adoption by Argentina and Uruguay of the Treaty concerning the Río de la Plata and its Maritime Front, a wide watercourse that between the 16th and 19th century was object of rivalry between Spain and Portugal, Great Britain and France, continuing later between the South American countries, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. The book makes a legal interpretation of the innovative solutions adopted by the Treaty for the River, the Common Fishing Zone in the adjacent sea, the Bi-national Commissions and other matters including its subsequent application, thus providing a systematic and updated insight into navigation, fisheries and pollution prevention among other uses.

Her sober, black-and-white depictions of Eastern Europe, shot in natural light on a variety of formats and cameras, explored concepts of borders, national identity and the vulnerability of humans within the continuum of history and world conflict. Upon her receipt of the prestigious Henri Cartier-Bresson Award in 2011, Robert Delpire observed: "Her work might be seen as a classic documentary approach but in fact it features a sensitivity and complexity that is deeply contemporary."
