Revisiting Language Learning Resources
Human and material resources are two key elements that make up the language learning process. Regarding material resources, nowadays new technologies can be said to play a leading role in most language learning environments. However, we cannot forget that these relatively new tools still coexist with more traditional ones which are still widely used in the foreign language classroom. On the other hand, the progressive emergence of new 'human roles' in language learning means that human resources have also become a key medium through which the learner accesses knowledge and practice towards language acquisition.There is an obvious need to carry out research on these resources in order to assess their potential for an optimum learning experience. This book tries to meet such needs offering the research work that different authors have carried out in this field.
Language Processing and Grammars
There is a growing awareness of the significance and value that modelling using information technology can bring to the functionally oriented linguistic enterprise. This encompasses a spectrum of areas as diverse as concept modelling, language processing and grammar modelling, conversational agents, and the visualisation of complex linguistic information in a functional linguistic perspective. This edited volume offers a collection of papers dealing with different aspects of computational modelling of language and grammars, within a functional perspective at both the theoretical and application levels. As a result, this volume represents the first instance of contemporary functionally oriented computational treatments of a variety of important language and linguistic issues. This book presents current research on functionally oriented computational models of grammar, language processing and linguistics, concerned with a broadly functional computational linguistics that also contributes to our understanding of languages within a functional and cognitive linguistic, computational research agenda.
Understanding Meaning and Knowledge Representation
Today, there is a need to develop natural language processing (NLP) systems from deeper linguistic approaches. Although there are many NLP applications which can work without taking into account any linguistic theory, this type of system can only be described as â oedeceptively intelligentâ . On the other hand, however, those computer programs requiring some language comprehension capability should be grounded in a robust linguistic model if they are to display the expected behaviour. The purpose of this book is to examine and discuss recent work in meaning and knowledge representation within theoretical linguistics and cognitive linguistics, particularly research which can be reused to model NLP applications.

Tio Carlos was born in Madrid in 1920. This book tells the story of his life as a Gipsy, Gitano. Due to circumstances he lived mostly in the provinces south of the capital. His lifespan includes some of the most turbulent times in newer Spanish history, and the many changes brought about had a decisive influence also on Gipsy life. His story tells about the traditional way of life in the Spanish countryside, and we later follow him and his family through the Spanish Civil war and the many social and economic changes that took place afterwards turning Spain from being a primarily agricultural society into a modern industrial state. His story tells about family structure, economic conditions, religious practices and social adaptation of an ethnic group that through history has managed to survive in spite of great adversities. Tio Carlos died on the 20th September 1994.
