This book illuminates what must always be at the heart of powerful schooling and authentic learning. Its focus is on free learning, with an emphasis on early East Asian thought as a vehicle through which learning may emerge. The volume describes learning as helping the learner become more conscious, more aware. As such the authors explain how quality learning encompasses all learning that is chosen by the learner. It is non-judgmental and their idea is that if learning is done by choice then direct harm will be mitigated because quality, willed learning is not just about the individual, but includes others — it is community focused as well as self-determined. In the first part of the volume the authors look specifically at how quality willed learning can inform the state and how it can protect the rights of children. The second part looks at what quality willed learning can mean to leaders. In the last part the authors look at what it can mean for teachers and finally what it can mean for the learners themselves.

This book seeks to understand how to internationalize curriculum without imperializing or imposing the old, colonial, and so-called first-world conceptualizations of education, teaching, and learning. The collection draws on the groundbreaking work of Dwayne Huebner in order to invite scholars into conversation with histories of curriculum studies and to posit them within it, opening up new spaces to work in and through curricular issues. This book will appeal to scholars, teachers, and students looking to reconceptualize international curriculum development and theory.

Provoking Curriculum Studies pushes forward a strong reading of the theoretical and methodological innovations taking place within curriculum studies research. Addressing an important gap in contemporary curriculum studies—conceptualizing scholars as poets and the potential of the poetic in education—it offers a framework for doing curriculum work at the intersection of the arts, social theory, and curriculum studies. Drawing on poetic inquiry, psychoanalysis, phenomenology, life writing, and several types of arts-based research methodologies, this diverse collection spotlights the intellectual genealogies of curriculum scholars such as Ted Aoki, Geoffrey Milburn and Roger Simon, whose p...

As teachers, we share experiences with one another. It is a way to make sense of our teaching lives and teaching selves. Ways of Being in Teaching is that kind of sharing; it is a scholarly conversation that will appeal to teachers who are tired of the tips and tricks, and want to talk more deeply about how to flourish in this profession. Most of us know ways to strengthen and sustain self, soul, heart, identity, and how these key touchstones also strengthen teaching. This book recognizes that who we are, where we are, and why, is as much a social process as a personal one. Attending to life purpose is a way of attending to teaching. Chapters in this text are insightfully forthright, challen...
