For many, the North Pole is a place where hopeful children send letters each year to a wishful, imaginary being who brings them gifts. For Kol, the North Pole is home. His father, Saint Nicholas, leads the North Pole, but they do far more than simply provide toys for all the good boys and girls. At least, they usually do. They provide a safe haven for the weary souls of humans and elves.This Christmas, tragedy has struck the North Pole. St. Nick has been cursed, and Kol is desperate to find the culprit and save his father before the city crumbles into a state of chaos. But he has never left the North Pole, nor does he know exactly where he is going--or what he'll do when he gets there. Bishop George Bell always felt that the Church must endeavour to meet the problems of the modern world. He was thus foremost in applying the precepts of the Christian faith to national and international issues. George Bell very often raised his voice in the House of Lords (of which he was a distinguished member from December 1937 till January 1958) against class and racial hatred, against war, and against totalitarianism, and spoke for the innocent and helpless victims of persecution. Complete texts of all Bell's House of Lords speeches are presented here, published for the first time in one volume. The issues that Bell tackled are, in essence, still relevant today. This volume also includes unpublished correspondence between George Bell and Rudolf Hess, Hitler's deputy. After the National Socialists came to power in Germany, Bell, as a committed Christian, felt that he had to act in defence of the German Church, which the Nazis were eager to destroy. The Bishop made strenuous efforts to contact people in power in Germany, people who, he knew, took decisions with momentous consequences. Rudolf Hess was one of them.
Over eighty essays are presented in this substantial two-volume set, the proceedings of the 10th International Aegean Conference held at the Italian School of Archaeology in Athens in 2004. They demonstrate that none of the cultures of the Bronze Age Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean existed in isolation, instead the whole area was a marketplace, operating through a sophisticated network of trade and diplomacy. Following a series of methodological papers, the contributions investigate the influence of Mycenaeans and Minoans across the whole area drawing on archaeological, material, iconographic and written sources as well as ceramics and seals. Sections focus in turn on evidence from Crete, Asia Minor, Cyprus, the Levant, Egypt and the central Mediterranean, followed by three sections on arts and crafts, seals and written sources. The majority of papers are in English and many are illustrated.
