Ethel Matson is a sensible, semi-retired professor whose life up to this point has been concerned with the pursuit of rational, tangible knowledge and experiences. Then she starts having both strange encounters and incredibly lucid dreams. In these supposed dreams, Ethel and her enigmatic and unruly companion, Willy (whom Ethels husband regards as a figment of her imagination) set about exploring the core essences of ideas shed only mildly wondered about before, like the interdependence of faith and science -- and life and death. Is her subconscious mind suddenly springing to life, or is there something more going on? Journeys of the Mind: The Amazing Adventures of Ethel and Willy, by author and retired professor Carol Edler Baumann, brings us twenty-seven interconnected episodes in the unusual experiences of Ethel Matson. As we delve into the conscious world, the subconscious world, and the world that lies between, we are faced with the questions of what is real and what is imagined, and whether reality actually matters if in the end we discover truth and everlasting love.

Global Convulsions affords the reader an array of observations, data, and insights pertaining to both local and global events around the issues of race, ethnicity and nationalism at the end of the twentieth century. It scrutinizes closely the phenomenon of race in both historical and scientific contexts, and calls out a range of sociohistorical forces that have engendered ethnicity and nationalism. Through case studies, the contributors bring into sharp focus an array of ethnic cleavages, the difficulty of the struggle for national rights where language and religion draw a hard ethnic divide, and the actual corrosiveness of ethnicity and nationalism on the state. The enduring value of Global...
After a coup in 1964 that ousted Brazil’s leftist President João Goulart from power, a brutal military dictatorship took the reins of the state. As a result, elements of the persecuted Brazilian Communist Party split from a more peaceful, orthodox line and declared their intent to wage an insurgent war against the government, plunging the country into a conflagration of violence marked by cycles of urban bombings, political assassinations, institutional torture, kidnappings, and summary executions. Concrete Inferno relays this period in Brazil in a lucid narrative history, exploring what drove the military coup of 1964, the subsequent rise of the Armed Left, and the successes and failures of the insurgency and how it concluded. Stretching from the rumblings of discontent during João Goulart’s ascendancy in 1961 to the strange conclusion of the dictatorship in 1985, the book draws on new primary sources and a wealth of English- and Portuguese-language resources to provide a complete and evenhanded portrait of the conflict.

Switzerland suffered four major terrorist attacks in 1969 and 1970, which forced the Swiss government to address the issue of international terrorism for the first time. Subsequently, “neutral” Switzerland worked closely with Western Cold War powers to develop international counterterrorism measures and forged a European-Israeli counterterrorist alignment to counter Palestinian terrorism in Europe. Using recently declassified archival records, this book is the first study to examine how the Swiss government positioned the country within the international struggle against terrorism. The book brings to light the creation of the Club de Berne, a secret European network of intelligence agencies connected to Israel and the United States. It offers new insights about the history of Swiss, Western European, and Israeli security cooperation.
