Black Theology, Slavery and Contemporary Christianity
Black Theology, Slavery and Contemporary Christianity explores the legacy of slavery in Black theological terms. Challenging the dominant approaches to the history and legacy of slavery in the British Empire, the contributors show that although the 1807 act abolished the slave trade, it did not end racism, notions of White supremacy, or the demonization of Blackness, Black people and Africa. This interdisciplinary study draws on biblical studies, history, missiology and Black theological reflection, exploring the strengths and limitations of faith as the framework for abolitionist rhetoric and action. This Black theological approach to the phenomenon of the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the institution of slavery draws on contributions from Africa, the Caribbean, North America and Europe.
Towards a Critical White Theology
Towards a Critical White Theology is a landmark text bringing together contributions from scholars and practitioners, Black/Postcolonial theologians and critical White theologians, from the UK, the USA and New Zealand, exposing the dynamics of whiteness in the history and the present of the Christian church, and setting an agenda for the future, especially for White-racialised theologians committed to dismantling whiteness. With sections addressing whiteness in relation to the Bible, church history, education and mission, congregational life, the contemporary USA, and public theology, this book tracks the emerging of a new theological discipline of Critical White Theology, that consciously follows in the wake of the long-established discipline of Black liberation theology. It acknowledges that so much that has passed for ‘theology’ over the centuries has been White Theology without naming it as such, and reaches out to its Black and Postcolonial theologian siblings in repentant, receptive humility and hopeful solidarity for a future liberated from the toxic sin of racism. The chapters in this book were originally published in Practical Theology and Black Theology.
Troubling (Public) Theologies
Theologies, no matter their designations, are public measures—they disclose as well as gauge the publics (near and far) on which they stand, sit, lie, or fall. Because publics shift and mingle, theologies require reimagining, relocating, and embracing fresh insights and energies. The insights and energies embraced in this work are in three clusters: spaces, bodies, and technologies. The spotlighted spaces are in Africa, Asia, Black America, the Caribbean, and Pasifika—beyond the eyes of mainline theologies; the privileged bodies have survived, with scars from empire and missionary positionings; and the welcomed technologies include Dalit, indigenous, art, poetry, cyborg, and the novel. This collection is troubling in several ways: first, reimagining and relocating are troubling acts upon their subject matter—here, public theologies. On that note, what theology is not public? Second, this work takes theologies in general, and not just the theologies that carry the “public” designation, to be public theologies. Third, this work takes theologies in general to be inherently troubling. In other words, theologies that are not troubling are not public enough.
