The primary purpose of this book is to provide a catharsis for myself. Maybe if I strip my mental, emotional and spiritual selves naked in little one-inch strips, analyzing what I find there, I’ll be able to understand myself. The secondary purpose is to use myself as a model for what I suspect is going on in the world. Mother Earth and all her cells (people) are undergoing a nervous breakdown, I sense. The old ways of being and doing are no longer working. I feel religion (man’s beliefs “about” God) is the fundamental cause of our erroneous assumptions about who we are, as a species, in relation to God (Infinite Intelligence). As I look around, pre- and post-September 11, 2001, I see that warring religious beliefs are at the foundation of the insanity in the world. Whatever God is, I AM THAT. And so are you. We’re all one. Let us minimize our differences and focus on what makes us all human. I feel it is life. And I further feel that LIFE is sending us urgent messages to unite in Love, so we can live in Peace. The alternative is to destroy ourselves and each other.

Gender at the Crossroads of Knowledge

Gender at the Crossroads of Knowledge

Gender at the Crossroads of Knowledge brings feminist anthropology up to date, highlighting the theoretical sophistication that characterizes recent research. Twelve essays by outstanding scholars, written with the volume's concerns specifically in mind, range across the broadest anthropological terrain, assessing and contributing to feminist work on biological anthropology, primate studies, global economy, new reproductive technologies, ethno-linguistics, race and gender, and more. The editor's introduction not only sets two decades of feminist anthropological work in the multiple contexts of changes in anthropological theory and practice, political and economic developments, and larger intellectual shifts, but also lays out the central insights feminist anthropology has to offer us in the postmodern era. The profound issues raised by the authors resonate with the basic interests of any discipline concerned with gender, that is, all of the social sciences and humanities.

Beguinages ('begijnhoven') are unique to the Low Countries. Originally, beguine communities were disseminated over a large area comprising the northern and southern Low Countries, northern France, and parts of present-day Germany and Switzerland. The typical 'court' beguinages, however, are represented most strongly in the southern Low Countries, where a considerable number of them still exist. On account of their historical, architectural, and socio-religious value, a selection of thirteen beguinages was recognized as World Heritage by Unesco in 1998. Only recently, research has paid closer attention to the material culture of beguinage life, including literacy and book culture among beguin...

The book is a multi-author survey (in 15 chapters) of the current state of knowledge and recent developments in our understanding of oxide surfaces. The author list includes most of the acknowledged world experts in this field. The material covered includes fundamental theory and experimental studies of the geometrical, vibrational and electronic structure of such surfaces, but with a special emphasis on the chemical properties and associated reactivity. The main focus is on metal oxides but coverage extends from 'simple' rocksalt materials such as MgO through to complex transition metal oxides with different valencies.
