Portrait of Route 66

By the time Route 66 received its official numerical designation in 1926, picture postcards had become popular travel souvenirs. At the time, these postcards with colorful images served as advertisements for roadside businesses. While cherished by collectors, these postcard depictions do not always reflect reality. They often present instead a view enhanced for promotional purposes. Portrait of Route 66 lets us see for the first time the actual photographs from which the postcards were made, and in describing how the production process worked, introduces us to an extraordinary archival collection, adding new history to this iconic road. Women on the Hunt

Hunting and shooting are generally considered male pursuits, but many women also hunt for sustenance and sport and have done so for centuries. The 58 articles and 45 illustrations in this volume of the Sports She Wrote series are culled from magazines and books written by women, originally published from 1881 to 1900 (127,000 words). They reveal the evolution of hunting from a means of obtaining food and clothing to a regulated practice aimed at ecological balance and sport. Articles cover a diverse array of hunting methods and prey, from traditional fox hunting and deer stalking to more exotic pursuits like alligator hunting in Florida, tiger hunting in Africa and whaling in the open sea. On a summer day in 1898, a family in Dover, Delaware, shared a box of chocolates they received in the mail from an anonymous sender. Within days, two of the seven family members were dead; the other five became ill but recovered. The search for the perpetrator soon moved from Delaware to California, where a suspect was quickly identified: Cordelia Botkin, lover of the husband of one of the poisoned women. This book chronicles the shoddy investigation that led to Botkin's indictment and the two sensational trials, adjudicated in the press, that found her guilty. National attention was drawn by the cross-country nature of the crime and the fact that the supposed perpetrator had never been in Delaware in her life. It was also a trial over what was viewed as the moral and sexual depravity of the two main participants, Botkin and Dunning (the husband), with most of that criticism directed at Botkin.
