Internationalism and Nationalism in European Political Thought
Throughout modern European history, the international order of the continent has been conditioned by the interaction between competing trends of internationalism and diverse forms of nationalism. The goal of this book is to distinguish the various types of each, to indicate their origins, trace their development, and analyze their interplay. Carsten Holbraad identifies three major types of each approach: conservative, liberal, and socialist. By looking at all three for both internationalism and nationalism, it is evident that no school of thought has a monopoly on either approach. As a result, the study is able to present a broader and more complex view of the intellectual trends in European history and politics.
Power Politics
This account of state-systems, which derives not from theoretical models but from the study of state-systems that have actually existed, emphasizes their moral or normative bases. It argues that a system of states presupposes a common culture. The essays deal with the concept of systems of states: the state-systems of Hellas; Hellas and Persia; the geographical and chronological boundaries of the modern states-system; international legitimacy; and triangles and duels. An introductory chapter by Hedley Bull draws the essays together and provides an account of Martin Wright's life and thought.
Danish Neutrality
This analytical account of Danish foreign policy from 1720 to 1990 is the first scholarly treatment of the subject in any language. Historically Danish policy, essentially the reaction of a small state to potential or actual conflict among great powers, has presented a succession of differentversions of neutrality. Analysing the ideas and tracing the attitudes behind each version, the author discusses the policy in terms of idealism and realism. The focus is on the neutralist tendencies that occasionally have marked Danish security policy in the years of NATO membership. The book alsoincludes an account of the new commitment to alliance solidarity and European union which has characterized Danish policy towards NATO and EEC since the revolutions in Eastern Europe and the breaching of the Berlin Wall, and concludes with some speculations about Danish foreign policy in the nearfuture. The central theme of the book is disengagement from or involvement in international politics.
