Inspecting the Interview
Interviews are omnipresent in scholarship and public discourses. They play a crucial role in various spheres, from collecting research data to providing persons in the public eye a platform in print and online media. Interviews do not only capture a dialogue; they provide a framework in which dialogue gets staged. As such a framework, the interview protocols experiential knowledge and personal experience in certain ways, according interlocutors different degrees of authority to speak. Frames of Friction
In Frames of Friction, Carsten Junker maps out a dazzling panorama of critical cultural debatesfrom the twentieth century to explore the ways in which African American speakers and writers established their authority and gained recognition. Taking into account the latest ideas from gender studies and African American studies, as well as current essay theory, Junker juxtaposes the ways in which African American authors and speakers from the 1920s to the 1970s debated critical topics with their white and Jewish contemporaries in order to emphasize the dialogic nature of the essay form. Ultimately, Junker hones in on the genre of essay itself, arguing that it is repeatedly questioned and reconstituted during times of social change.
A History of the Prussian Junkers
Surveys the rise of the Prussian nobility from medieval times and their role in politics. From the late 19th century on, the Prussian Junkers' conservatism became more nationalistic, "völkisch", and antisemitic. Influenced by the Agrarian League, which defended landowners' interests, the Conservative Party adopted an antisemitic platform in 1892. Describes the Junkers' opposition to the Weimar Republic and determination to maintain their supremacy in rural districts, opposing "Jewish influence". In 1920 the organization of nobles, the Deutsche Adelgenossenschaft, adopted the racist "Aryan paragraph". The Landbund, successor to the Agrarian League, was increasingly dominated by the Nazis. Junker influence on Hindenburg helped bring Hitler to power. Ch. 10 (p. 179-190) describes the Junkers' loss of political and social status after 1933; some rose to prominence in the SS or the army, usually without identifying with Nazi ideology. A small minority resisted, some of them influenced by reports on the massacre of Jews.

Familial Feeling
This open access book discusses British literature as part of a network of global entangled modernities and shared aesthetic concerns, departing from the retrospective model of a postcolonial “writing back” to the centre. Accordingly, the narrative strategies in the texts of early Black Atlantic authors, like Equiano, Sancho, Wedderburn, and Seacole, and British canonical novelists, such as Defoe, Sterne, Austen, and Dickens, are framed as entangled tonalities. Via their engagement with discourses on slavery, abolition, and imperialism, these texts shaped an understanding of national belonging as a form of familial feeling. This study thus complicates the “rise of the novel” framework and British middle-class identity formation from a transnational perspective combining approaches in narrative studies with postcolonial and queer theory.
