In A Surrealist Stratigraphy of Dorothea Tanning s Chasm, Catriona McAra offers the first critical study of the literary work of the celebrated American surrealist painter and soft sculptor. McAra fills a major gap in the scholarship, repositioning Tanning s writing at the centre of her entire creative oeuvre and focusing on the little-known manuscript, Abyss, a gothic-flavoured, desert adventure which Tanning (1910-2012) worked on intermittently throughout her creative life, finally publishing it in 2004 as Chasm: A Weekend. McAra undertakes a major reassessment of the visual and literary principles upon which the surrealist movement was initially founded. The anti-(fairy) tale has long existed in the shadow of the traditional fairy tale as its flipside or evil twin. According to André Jolles in Einfache Formen (1930), such Antimärchen are contemporaneous with some of the earliest known oral variants of familiar tales. The Phantoms of Surrealism
The photomontage pieces that form the core of this project are built around a repeating grid of 15 rectangles into which photographs from a specific location are placed to form a playful spirit or 'phantom' of place. Each phantom is from a different location and each site chosen has personal resonances or relates to the history of surrealism in Britain and Europe. The works are both an interpretation of landscape and place as well as an opportunity to explore the history of the surrealist movement in Britain and how the idea of surrealism is often tied to landscape explored, not for its picturesque or romantic aspects but for its psychological and visionary resonance.

Surrealist women’s writing: A critical exploration is the first sustained critical inquiry into the writing of women associated with surrealism. Featuring original essays by leading scholars of surrealism, the volume demonstrates the extent and the historical, linguistic, and culturally contextual breadth of this writing. It also highlights how the specifically surrealist poetics and politics of these writers’ work intersect with and contribute to contemporary debates on, for example, gender, sexuality, subjectivity, otherness, anthropocentrism, and the environment. Texts explore the multifaceted conceptual practice of the artist Ilana Halperin. Ilana Halperin (b.1973) is an artist who shares her birthday with an Icelandic volcano. Working through the aesthetics of geology since the late 1990s, her multifaceted, conceptual practice unearths the intimate poetics of rocks, minerals, and body stones. Halperin's fieldwork has led her from erupting volcanoes in Hawaii to petrifying caves in France and geothermal springs in Japan. Felt Events surveys the last two decades of Halperin's output (1999-2020), representing a mid-career moment of reflection. Felt Events includes critical and experimental writing from international curators, Lisa Le Feuvre and Naoko Mabon, art historians Andrew Patrizio and Dominic Paterson, anthropologist Jerry Zee, and writer Nicola White.
