Bad Country

WINNER OF THE SPUR AWARD FOR BEST WESTERN CONTEMPORARY NOVEL EDGAR AWARD FINALIST FOR BEST FIRST NOVEL SHAMUS AWARD FINALIST FOR BEST FIRST NOVEL Rodeo Grace Garnet lives with his old dog in a remote corner of Arizona known to locals as El Hoyo. Retired from the rodeo circuit and scraping by on piecework as a bounty hunter, warrant server, and divorce snoop, he doesn’t have much choice but to say yes when hired to solve the murder of an Indian teenager, whose death is part of a mysterious rompecabeza—a classic crime puzzler—that includes multiple killings, cold-blooded betrayals, and low-down scheming, with Rodeo caught in the middle. Bad Country is a noir novel that is as deep and twisty as a desert arroyo. With confident, accomplished prose, CB McKenzie captures the rough-and-tumble outer reaches of the Southwest in a transfixingly original style that transcends the traditional crime novel.

Burn What Will Burn

"Burn What Will Burn is a gritty, gripping mystery and an enthralling character study of its poet-protagonist, who is self-exiled and bedeviled by the locals, the summer Arkansas heat, and his own past. I was hooked by sentence one and burned right through the pages."—Michael Kardos, author of Before He Finds Her Bob Reynolds doesn't recognize the body in the creek, but he does recognize the danger of it. He's a newcomer to town, not entirely welcome, and not entirely on good footing with the sheriff. So far he's kept his head down, mostly over the bar at the Crow's Nest. But he has interests other than drinking and spending his inheritance, including one that goes by the name Tammy Fay Sm...

Balancing Ecosystem Values: Innovative Experiments for Sustainable Forestry is a compendium of more than 40 contributions from Asia, Europe, and North America. The theme encompasses experiments implemented at an operational scale to test ecological, social, or economic responses to silvicultural treatments designed to balance the complex set of objectives currently targeted in sustainable forest management. Several invited and plenary papers emphasize the variety of outcomes demanded by the public, as well as the essential role that these long-term studies will play in allowing natural resource managers to make better-informed, science-based decisions. A broad spectrum of silvicultural treatments and systems are covered, as are simulation runs with different types of models and discussion about design challenges for scaling up from stands to landscapes. Diverse forest ecosystems, stand structures and plant, animal, and fungal species are also considered. The conference included 2 days in the field where participants saw several types of the comprehensive field experiments firsthand. The conference concluded with a critique from state, private, and public land managers.

Power Systems Cybersecurity

This book covers power systems cybersecurity. In order to enhance overall stability and security in wide-area cyber-physical power systems and defend against cyberattacks, new resilient operation, control, and protection methods are required. The cyberattack-resilient control methods improve overall cybersecurity and stability in normal and abnormal operating conditions. By contrast, cyberattack-resilient protection schemes are important to keep the secure operation of a system under the most severe contingencies and cyberattacks. The main subjects covered in the book are: 1) proposing new tolerant and cyberattack-resilient control and protection methods against cyberattacks for future power systems, 2) suggesting new methods for cyberattack detection and cybersecurity assessment, and 3) focusing on practical issues in modern power systems.

Role of the Adipocyte in Development of Type 2 Diabetes

Role of the Adipocyte in Development of Type 2 Diabetes

Adipocytes are important in the body for maintaining proper energy balance by storing excess energy as triglycerides. However, efforts of the last decade have identified several molecules that are secreted from adipocytes, such as leptin, which are involved in signaling between tissues and organs. These adipokines are important in overall regulation of energy metabolism and can regulate body composition as well as glucose homeostasis. Excess lipid storage in tissues other than adipose can result in development of diabetes and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In this book we review the role of adipocytes in development of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and NAFLD. Because type 2 diabetes has been suggested to be a disease of inflammation we included several chapters on the mechanism of inflammation modulating organ injury. Finally, we conclude with a review on exercise and nutrient regulation for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and its co-morbidities.
