The Exercise of the Spatial Imagination in Pre-Modern China
This volume is distinctive for its extraordinarily interdisciplinary investigations into a little discussed topic, the spatial imagination. It probes the exercise of the spatial imagination in pre-modern China across five general areas: pictorial representation, literary description, cartographic mappings, and the intertwining of heavenly and earthly space. It recommends that the spatial imagination in the pre-modern world cannot adequately be captured using a linear, militarily framed conceptualization. Zoonotic diseases are infections that can be transmitted between people and animals. These infections are caused by microorganisms, such as viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi. Patients with zoonotic infections can experience severe and life-threatening illness, whilst others remain asymptomatic. For example, animals can harbor germs asymptomatically for long periods with no apparent impact on their own health. However, some microbes carried by animals can result in human illness, depending on the zoonotic disease. Furthermore, it is widely reported that almost 60% of human diseases are zoonotic, and at least 75% of the pathogens that cause diseases in humans are of zoonotic origin.
Use of Timber in Tall Multi-Storey Buildings
Since the dawn of civilization, timber has been a primary material for achieving great structural engineering feats. Yet during the late 19th century and most of the 20th century it lost currency as a preferred material for construction of large and tall multi-storey building superstructures. This Structural Engineering Document (SED) addresses a reawakening of interest in timber and timber-based products as primary con-struction materials for relatively tall, multi-storey buildings. Emphasis throughout is on holistically addressing various aspects of performance of complete systems, reflecting that major gaps in knowhow relate to design concepts rather than technical information about timber as a material. Special con-sideration is given to structural form, fire vulnerability, and durability aspects for attaining desired building performance over lifespans that can be centuries long.
