Hanford
Hanford, in the south San Joaquin Valley near the junction of the San Joaquin and Kings Rivers, has grown from its origin as a railroad stop to a modern city and business center while maintaining its agricultural tradition through ranches, dairy farms, vineyards, and other crops. Created by the Southern Pacific Railroad and named for paymaster James Madison Hanford, the town was incorporated in 1891 and named the seat of Kings County two years later. With a penchant for preservation and an appreciation for history, Hanford's residents enjoy living in one of California's true hidden gems.

Black Elected Officials 1990
The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies began compiling data on the number of black elected officials in the United States in 1970. Since then the number of black elected officials has increased steadily each year. In the 1990 edition of this annual volume, black elected officials sworn into office for the 1990 term are listed by state and indexed alphabetically. There is also an overview of geographic distribution; female black elected officials; federal, state, substate regional, county, and municipal breakdowns. Blacks elected to judicial, law enforcement, and educational offices are also listed.
Strings of Life
This book concerns traditional music in upper North Carolina and southwestern Virginia. The historians are its practitioners. This collection of anecdotes, stories, and utterances came from the musicians as they talked about themselves or about other players with whom they are or were familiar. This historical-musical census-of-sorts cites and identifies more than 1,300 players of traditional music in an area that, in terms of its music, disregards state borders. Of the musicians who could be dated, about 120 were born prior to 1870; at least 400 between 1870 and 1900; and more than 220 after 1900. The majority of these musicians have never before been documented. Of the 1,300, only some fifteen percent are women; only some five percent are black. This book functions by letting the informants take their lead, and an effort has been made to keep auctorial intrusion to a minimum. -- From product description.
