Pensar la ciudad desde el marco conceptual del espacio público y redefinir el concepto de espacio público desde nuestras ciudades, tal es la propuesta del libro. Ello obliga a los autores aquí reunidos a aventurarse simultáneamente en el terreno de las precisiones teóricas y en el de los análisis de casos, a trabajar con conceptos y con actores, con espacios imaginarios y con espacios territorialmente delimitados. A mostrar, a través de diversas experiencias urbanas (los condominios, los comités vecinales, el diseño urbano, las ONG citadinas, los servicios de salud) cómo transcurre la vida pública en las megaciudades contemporáneas; y cómo en el encuentro en esos espacios, ciudadanos, autoridades, expertos, y movimientos sociales pugnan por redefinir, en cada caso, los límites entre lo público y lo privado.

Virginia Aspe’s erudite Approaches to the Theory of Freedom offers a new interpretation of “Primero Sueño”–probably the highest Spanish-written poem–, written by the nun Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz . Aspe considers the philosophical and theological influences regarding Sor Juana’s development of her concept and ideal of freedom. With vast erudition, Aspe helps advance the field of Sor Juana studies beyond what Paz was able to accomplish. She emphasises the influence of the Jesuit theology of the University of Coimbra. New perspectives and references available to the Spanish speaking world, such as the recent translation of several previously unknown Latin texts from Sor Juana’s Mexican contemporaries, provide insights that help Aspe take our understanding of the poem further and cast new lights on her idea of freedom, as well as her background and references. Approaches to the Theory of Freedom help us to become familiar with the way this magnificent poem becomes a defense of freedom. That is why this book means a significant contribution to our understanding of Sor Juana’s thought and the poetry of Sor Juana’s period.
Older people negotiating dance routines, intimacy, and racialized differences provide a focal point for an ethnography of danzón in Veracruz, the Mexican city closely associated with the music-dance genre. Hettie Malcomson draws upon on-site research with semi-professional musicians and amateur dancers to reveal how danzón connects, and does not connect, to blackness, joyousness, nostalgia, ageing, and romance. Challenging pervasive utopian views of danzón, Malcomson uses the idea of ambivalence to explore the frictions and opportunities created by seemingly contrary sentiments, ideas, sensations, and impulses. Interspersed with experimental ethnographic vignettes, her account takes readers into black and mestizo elements of local identity in Veracruz, nostalgic and newer styles of music and dance, and the friendships, romances, and rivalries at the heart of regular danzón performance and its complex social world. Fine-grained and evocative, Danzón Days journeys to one of the genre’s essential cities to provide new perspectives on aging and romance and new explorations of nostalgia and ambivalence.
