The Ledgers of Merit and Demerit

The ledgers of merit and demerit were a type of morality book that achieved sudden and widespread popularity in China during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Consisting of lists of good and bad deeds, each assigned a certain number of merit or demerit points, the ledgers offered the hope of divine reward to users "good" enough to accumulate a substantial sum of merits. By examining the uses of the ledgers during the late Ming and early Qing periods, Cynthia Brokaw throws new light on the intellectual and social history of the late imperial era. The ledgers originally functioned as guides to salvation for twelfth-century Taoists and Buddhists, but Brokaw shows how the literati of turb...

Economics of Renewable Energy

The book provides a comprehensive review of renewable energy from an economic perspective throughout the last two hundred years, starting from traditional renewable energy based on bio and hydro energy. The focus is on modern renewable energy based on geothermal, wind, and solar energy. It emerged when innovative entrepreneurs captured opportunities for valuable energy services. As the services with renewable energy expanded, the costs of technologies decreased entailing global commercialisation. This enables larger access to energy and emission reduction of carbon dioxide, but also causes larger differences in the energy resources across countries which impedes international policies. That ...

New Path to Real Cures for Chronic Diseases:

In this book, we prove that medicine has failed to find cures for chronic diseases and failed to address its failures in the last 145 years. We previously demonstrated that diseases studied under current medical models are remote from what is going on in the human body. Medicine could not change it. In more than a century, medicine repeats the same errors in treatment of diseases. To explore a new path to cures, we have included our disease theories on chronic diseases, new research models and required infrastructures. Our disease theories tell that both disease progress and disease reversal are very slow processes. Due to the slowness of changes, a great cure is interfered by a large number of factors and the CNS. Thus, randomized controlled trials most probably produce meaningless or misleading findings. Great cures are not what medical science can "detect". One of our subjects concerns human lifespans and the organ's functional reserve. It implies that drug side effects cannot be studied by observing symptoms, which can be seen only after organ functions have been depressed near the disability level. Thus, harmful side effects are not what medicine can always "tell".

Organizing for Quality

This challenging and highly practical book draws on the findings from an international study designed to help practitioners and researchers understand the factors and processes that enable healthcare organisations in the United States and Europe to achieve - and sustain - high quality services for their users. The in-depth case-studies from seven leading hospitals give an international, evidence-based outlook that focuses on both the organisational and cultural processes of quality improvement. Implication for research and practice are considered, and a checklist of possible challenges has been drawn up to help identify any 'gaps' in initiatives. Healthcare policy makers and shapers including hospital chief executives and NHS directors will find this book enlightening, as will healthcare quality improvement and service development researchers and professionals. Clinicians with an interest in quality improvement will also find much of interest.

Advances in Cryptology – ASIACRYPT 2021

The four-volume proceedings LNCS 13090, 13091, 13092, and 13093 constitutes the proceedings of the 27th International Conference on the Theory and Application of Cryptology and Information Security, ASIACRYPT 2021, which was held during December 6-10, 2021. The conference was planned to take place in Singapore, but changed to an online format due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The total of 95 full papers presented in these proceedings was carefully reviewed and selected from 341 submissions. The papers were organized in topical sections as follows: Part I: Best paper awards; public-key cryptanalysis; symmetric key cryptanalysis; quantum security; Part II: physical attacks, leakage and countermeasures; multiparty computation; enhanced public-key encryption and time-lock puzzles; real-world protocols; Part III: NIZK and SNARKs; theory; symmetric-key constructions; homomorphic encryption and encrypted search; Part IV: Lattice cryptanalysis; post-quantum cryptography; advanced encryption and signatures; zero-knowledge proofs, threshold and multi-signatures; authenticated key exchange.

Presenting the dynamic laws of economic quantities, this book tackles one of the core difficulties of current economic theory: that of transforming abstract equations of equilibrium into precise dynamic rules. The theoretical framework of neoclassical micro theory has historically prohibited its development into a quantitative science. Estola identifies the main weaknesses of this framework as follows: 1) Static optimization does not allow for the modelling of time-dependent production and consumption flows; 2) The assumption of optimal behaviours forecloses any understanding of changes in economic quantities, as none will change its optimal behaviour. The author of this title assumes that e...
