The long nineteenth century (c.1780–c.1920) in Western Europe saw an unprecedented rise in the production and possession of material goods. The material culture diversified and led to a rich variety of expressions. Dovetailing with a process of confessionalisation that manifested itself quite simultaneously, material religion witnessed its heyday in this period; from church buildings to small devotional objects. The open access publication of this book has been published with the support of the Swiss National Science Foundation. In Staging Holiness: The Case of Hospitaller Rhodes (ca. 1309-1522) Sofia Zoitou offers a study of the history of relic collections, devotional rituals, and sites invested with special meaning on Rhodes, during a time when the island became one of the most frequented ports of call for ships carrying pilgrims from Venice to the Holy Land. Scrutinizing late medieval travel reports by pilgrims from all over Europe along with extant historical, archaeological, visual, and material evidence, Sofia Zoitou traces the various forms of the Rhodian cultic sites’ evolution and perception, ultimately considered as an overall artistic strategy for the staging of the sacred.

This study also shows that influences came not only from Sicily, South Italy and North Africa, but also from more distant Mediterranean regions and sometimes from quite unexpected sources.
At War With My Mind
Having kept diaries throughout my enduring battle with Anorexia Nervosa and depression, this is the greatest insight into mental health illness. It captures what the voice was telling me inside my mind, what it is like to live in a psychiatric hospital for a year at a time, to be a subject in a scientific study, and how I kept fighting my way out of the darkest places to finally reach a full recovery.I also share the eye-opening experience of volunteering in Ghana. At a time of wellness, but knowing the demons would soon come back for me, I wanted to do something good with my life and be of help to others for a change.I survived against the odds, but I lost many on the way. So now I use the gift of being alive to raise awareness, to educate, to stop anyone suffering the way I did and to give hope to those who are.
Crusades
Crusades covers the seven hundred years from the First Crusade (1095-1102) to the fall of Malta (1798) and draws together scholars working on theatres of war, their home fronts and settlements from the Baltic to Africa and from Spain to the Near East and on theology, law, literature, art, numismatics and economic, social, political and military history.
