German Theory and Practice of War

In this book, Charles Andler and Ernest Lavisse provide a detailed account of the theory and practice of war in Germany. Through a careful analysis of German military thought, and a thorough investigation of the strategies and tactics employed by German forces throughout history, Andler and Lavisse paint a vivid picture of the German way of war. This book is a valuable resource for military historians and strategists. Internationalism Toward Diplomatic Crisis

Internationalism Toward Diplomatic Crisis

This book analyzes how the Second International reacted to international diplomatic crises and what was the attitude of French, German and Italian socialists between 1889 and 1915, the year in which Italy entered the World War. This book shows that the Second International became over the years more and more involved in the fight against war and learnt to respond to situations of diplomatic crisis. An example of this is the fact that its last congress before the outbreak of the First World War, the Basel Congress of 1912, was nothing less than a great international socialist demonstration of opposition to war. However, the fact that France, Germany or Italy were involved in a diplomatic crisis hindered the International's ability to respond effectively to it. For all these factors, the attitude of the International is very different from one crisis to another.

The Mobilization of Intellect

The Mobilization of Intellect

Behind the fa ade of unity, the French intelligentsia was riven by the same fundamental divisions that had characterized it before the war. For example, the Republican Left argued that German nationalism and militarism began after Kant, with Fichte or Hegel, while the Catholic and nationalistic reactionary Right denounced Kant as the evil inspiration of France's liberal democracy and public school system. The heated rhetoric of the war and the unbearable loss of young lives, says Hanna, lent weight to a redefinition of French culture in national terms--and this, ironically, ended in the cultural conservatism of Vichy France. This is the first study of the power of French pens and words during and after the Great War. It is a contribution to French and European history as well as to intellectual history.

The rise to dominance of marginalist economics coincided with a major increase in the spread of socialist ideas. As many socialist and Marxist thinkers were preocuppied with economic questions this was scarcely a development that could be ignored. Socialists either had to defend Marxist economics against marginalist criticism or show that socialism and marginalism were compatible. This volume explores the varied socialist responses in a number of major European countries including Italy, France, Russia and German speaking countries.
