Charles Carson McKinley was born in 1798 in North Carolina. He married Nancy Wallace ca. 1822. The couple had nine children. Charles, along with his family and his two brothers settled in Pike (or Upson) County, Georgia in 1827. The families were successful farmers and became wealthy landowners. In 1849, Charles sold his holdings in Georgia and started out for Texas with his entire family, including his adult children, their spouses and children. They reached Kosciusko, Mississippi in 1850. They rented farm land and stayed for one year, long enough to raise crops and sell them. In the fall of 1850, they resumed the journey to Texas. They settled in east-central Texas in Limestone County and bought land near the village of Eutaw.
